From the Back Cover
From the back cover:Our nation is hungry for unity. Most Americans would rather celebrate what we have in common than focus on our differences. But the feelings of division are real. In recent years, the very foundation of our melting-pot society has been shaken―ironically, by our differences. We long for a story that will give us a glimpse of how to once again find harmony within our diversity. This is that story. From the flap:If friendship and reconciliation can happen in Washington, DC, it can happen anywhere.Unified tells the remarkable story of two men who came from very different backgrounds: one the ambitious grandson of a cotton picker, the other trained as a lawyer. Decades ago, no one would have predicted their paths would one day be intertwined. But they became good friends and an inspiration to others. If such a friendship can thrive in the competitive world of Washington, DC, it can happen in your community as well.If we’re going to heal the division in our nation, it will only happen through dedicated friendships that overcome our differences. That’s why Senator Tim Scott and Congressman Trey Gowdy are committed to sharing their story to encourage and inspire others. We can restore our communities―one friendship at a time.

I read this book in one day and was inspired with every word. I have long admired both of these men but never knew they were such good friends. So often I have tried to say to family and others in our community, "quit looking to Washington to solve all our problems. Start with your neighbor, colleagues, start local!" I am so sad that Congressman Goudy is not seeking reelection, because he is one of the good guys in Washington. After learning so much more about him (and Senator Scott) I can totally understand how frustrating it must be to try to do what is right in such a toxic environment. Our country is great and there is good all around, even in Washington. Senator Scott has his work cut out for him. I pray that God continues to guide him and that others in our capital will listen!
United States Senator Tim Scott and United States Representative Trey Gowdy, both of whom represent the state of South Carolina in Congress, have written a marvelous book that not only tells a warm story of a great, if not unlikely, friendship between them and their families, but also offers an inspirational anecdotal theory of how we can unite our communities and nation by actively reaching out to those whose backgrounds are different from our own for understanding of others’ perspectives on the goals we all share as citizens and humans.Senator Scott and Chairman Gowdy take turns each chapter in providing their alternating perspectives on a variety of issues – sometimes agreeing and other times diverging, while always building their mutual bond of friendship through respect and empathy: navigating the halls of Congress as freshmen United States Representatives in 2011; being thrown into competition for the open United States Senate seat in South Carolina vacated by Jim DeMint in 2012; confronting the pain of the fatal shooting at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston in 2015; supporting each other through the decision of Congressman Gowdy to run one final time in 2016 and take on chairmanship of the House Select Committee on Benghazi; supporting each other as Senator Scott manages the pressure of a national Republican spokesperson as a black conservative; confronting the further pain of the Officer Michael Slager fatal shooting of Walter Scott in Charleston that resulted in a hung jury trial for murder against the officer in 2016; juxtaposing the views of the authors as in the one case a black businessman-politician and in the other case as a white prosecutor-politician on the issue of local law enforcement; recounting key mentors in each of their young lives; and the importance of friendship, dialogue, and understanding in creating reconciliation and transformation. The lessons Senator Scott and Chairman Gowdy teach in this book move quickly in a well written narrative that is infused with their passion and heartfelt verve at every step as they forge a friendship that undoubtedly will last forever. Their fascinating travails are at once congressional, spiritual, and human – and are relevant to students of history, politics, sociology, and citizenship. As a former executive congressional aide, I can promise you the country will desperately miss the skills of Chairman Gowdy in public service as much as Senator Scott will certainly miss his friend’s nightly companionship at dinner in Washington, D.C. But we owe our thanks to the Chairman for a job well done and congratulations on returning home to his family. It will be up to the Senator to carry-on the estimable blueprint they have offered in this book for moving the country forward in the halls of Capitol Hill. And it is a blueprint well worth hearing and replicating by all of us back in our own American hamlets.“Unified: How Our Unlikely Friendship Gives Us Hope For A Divided Country†tells great stories and provides great lessons that can hopefully be applied to our political arena as well as our everyday lives.
Amazing book written from each man's point of view about their friendship, their life before Congress and their action plan to make an impact on current issues that older and younger generations wrestle with in today's world. Each man is honest in a raw and powerful perspective that relates to any race or political affiliation. Easy to read and will leave you wanting to partner with them in their mission to reach out and build bridges with others.
If your daily meal of consuming politics includes a main course of divisiveness, bread buttered with contempt, and a dessert of stand your ground tribalism, this read may not be for you. Or... maybe this book is exactly for you! The Senator and Congressman express well the value and meaning of integrity, hope, and character, while navigating the fiery friendship furnace of DC. This book is less policy heavy than I had anticipated. Agree or disagree with their political party or policy stances, the underlying message in this book is of great worth to the country.
Today I received my copy of the book and two audio albums. My son received his copy of the book yesterday. Oh joy! from Montana and Colorado! This book we will keep and turn to again and again. It is not just the stories of two remarkable men and their friendship. It is a guidebook that will change America! Thank you and God bless you both!
I have read well over 1000 books in my life thus far and I cannot remember when I have felt the impact of one as much as this one. I would highly recommend it to everyone. It will help with any relationship or conflict. I cannot tell you how much of a difference it will make in your life and relationships. I will be using it as a study with my Young Adult Sunday School class.
Uplifting book by a senator and a congressman from SC, both Republicans but one caucasian and one black. They each share portions in the book, describing their different backgrounds, the people whose lives influenced them, how they got to know each other in Congress, and became VERY close friends, both they and their families. Not all our legislators are "politicians" in the bad sense of the word, which this book certainly shows. It is published at a very appropriate time, when so many of our legislators hate the opposition and don't understand how you can disagree and still be friends. The last few chapters get a little tedious, but this is a minor point.
This book is a quick read with a positive message. I enjoyed insight into Tim Scott & Trey Gowdy’s personal relationship in the context of current events. These two are genuinely decent and humble men of integrity, virtually unheard of in politicians today. With his message of hope, Tim Scott has a bright future, as does Gowdy. Gowdy’s departure is a great loss, but I understand & wish him the best. I believe Gowdy when he describes friendships with people in Washington on the other side of the aisle. I wish more people would speak of unity and finding common ground. Gentlemen like this give me hope for the future of our Republic.
