These books are great! I highly recommend these for the younger crowd that is learning how to read. The books are about half the height of the regular-sized books and have maybe 8-10 pages of short sentences.Kids that are already proficient readers probably won't get much out of these. They're easy books and take a minute or two to read. There's not much substance to them.My four year-old is highly impressed with them. He repeats after me and I wouldn't call it "reading", but it's a good first step!
I am a first grade teacher and I was looking for cute, relevant, interesting phonics books for my students for Christmas. I have 11 boys in my class, so I figured I'd get the most bang for my buck by getting a 12-book phonics set--and they all LOVE the Ninja Turtles. (I got Shopkins phonics books for the girls--check out my review for that.) These books are cute but very tiny and short for what I had in mind.The first 6 are about short vowel sounds, and the last 6 are long vowel sounds. They have about 6 pages of text, 1-2 sentences per page, and about 3-5 words per sentence. I don't feel like it's enough of a challenge for some, but it's good for a struggling or beginning reader.
I really didn't know what to expect when I ordered the TMNT Phonics Power for my six year old son. However, when it came in he was so excited to get started! We do one book a week and it's amazing at how much attention he pays to the words because it's the TMNT! The books are short enough to hold their attention, but have a great deal of words to help with phonics. I'm one happy homeschooling mom!
My sons (ages 3&5) love these books dearly. The way the words are laid out, on a blank page or at least separate from the illustrations, are appropriate for beginning readers or kids that can only identify letters and some words. The front covers are a bit difficult for a new reader to read as the letters of the title are stylized in the “TMNT font†and there is a lot of extra words on the front. I gave a three star rating because the stories do not always make much sense, a common enough affliction for these phonics books. But my kids have been exposed to enough cohesive narratives and rich characters to be annoyed by the storylines. For example, one story has the turtles being chased by droids in the van, but nothing about how they escape. Here is the text of that page and the next: “They get chased on the way. The van shakes! Oh, no! The cake! (Turn the page) The cake is okay! The turtles are safe.†My kids are never satisfied by this and other similar storylines and I end up making up what happens. In other books in the series the storylines are still simple but make sense all the way through. This could have been done better in all 12 books. Also, the illustrations are clearly reused several times - a small thing, I’m sure to keep the cost down. I’m not even sure my kids care. But I’ve seen better beginning reading series and phonics books that retain some integrity of narrative and put full effort into the illustrations; however, I haven’t yet found one for these particular characters. Overall, sufficient for what I purchased them for. I do appreciate that the narratives are tame and not too scary, important for the age range (preschool through kindergarten or 1st grade) at which the reading level is aimed. I also do not like that the letter a used is represented by a non-standard a, not the one taught in most writing books. My kids know that this a represents the sound the standard a makes, but it is unnecessary at this level and could have been fixed by choosing a different font.
My three year old was so excited to get these books and loves to read them with me. He's a huge TMNT fan so anything dealing with the turtles he's all over.They are smaller than what I was expecting (I don't know why I thought they'd be bigger considering I had similar books as a child and those were the same size as these) and are the size of a cd case. The writing is fairly large and double spaced so your finger can follow the words without covering the words below.It took me much longer than expected to write this review because my son keeps coming up to me wanting to read another one of the books.
Books are small about the size of a slice of bread but perfect for my 5 year old. He enjoys reading the stories and the fact that the books are only about 5 pages long with 3 to 8 words on each page.
My 5-year-old nephew is learning to read and loves these books, his little brother, aged 2, carries them around babbling words and doing the actions he sees. The characters they love are a great way to encourage reading! Small sized which help my nephew stay focused and feels accomplished! These are just like the ones I had growing up! Yes, they are cheap but so worth the lesson of reading!
Every week he stays on track with his lessons he gets a new book. I can't believe how excited he was for each one! I think it really matters when the story content motivates the reader. I don't normally spend on new books as we have a nice library and thrift stores but these really encouraged my kindergartener :) Not very sturdy books, I'd call them pamphlets if you wonder about the quality. Pictures and colors are nice and I'd buy these sets again if they had another storyline my kids enjoyed
