I was really hoping for a bit more from this. It's got definitions and descriptions for every ballet term I've ever heard (and then some), and even has pronunciation guides for those of us who don't speak French, so what's missing? In a word, presentation. In case you can't tell from the Amazon preview, only the last 10 pages have any diagrams at all. And the diagrams aren't even very good. I can't tell which is supposed to be the right or left leg, in some of them, or which direction the dancer is facing. The rest of the book is just text. It reads more like somebody's typed up class notes, than what I'd call a technical manual.Ink and paper is always going to be a mediocre way to transmit knowledge about dance, but surely we can do better than this. If I asked you to think of the best way to show the differences between the types of battements, I'm sure you could come up with something better than "8 pages of solid text", which is what we have here. Rond de jambes take 6 pages. 7 pages of jetes. That's why it reads like somebody typed up their college notes, and selected "alphabetize". If you were writing this in order, you'd probably realize after a few pages of writing battement descriptions that this was not a useful way to convey information.I would love it if somebody published this same information, but with the help of an information designer and a (good) illustrator. There's a wealth of information here. It's just not in a format that's easy to digest. This book is good to have around because it's small and cheap, and it has pronunciations and definitions, but it's not the most useful resource for most of the positions in it. Once you know the spelling, a Google Images or YouTube search for that term will give you a much better picture of what it is.
For a little paperback book, you get a lot of very useful reference material. Especially for dancers who are dabbling in choreography such as myself! Positions, steps, and step combinations are all listed in the proper French, dictionary style, along with other terms you'll find handy. There are also sections of good, simple diagrams which further illuminate the definitions. I've been using this little book as a reference far more often than my thick tomes rife with multiple photographs - I already know what it looks like and how to do it, just not always how to describe it properly when writing choreography or making step charts. (Also very helpful when I forget the proper name of an obscure step, sequence, or position!) As a professional dancer, I highly recommend this book for the libraries of all from students to amateurs to professionals, and of course, as I've said, anyone dabbling in choreography will find this book an invaluable resource.
Grant's book is invaluable for EVERY dancer, not only for ballet. The explanations are well-written, concise, and useful. It is easy and enjoyable to read. It make the French terminology of ballet accessible to everyone. It is valuable for the new dancer of ANY age, AND it is used as a resource by many very experienced teachers.
I am a ballet dancer and teacher and use this little book almost every day.I have three copies of it! Keep one in my office, one in my dance bag, and one at the studio.Comprehensive, easy to read and understand, and a must-have for anyone who wants to learn more about ballet vocabulary and explanation of different schools and styles.Illustrated, which also helps.
This is still one of the best resources for ballet terminology around. Spelling, pronunciation, definitions and a quick overview of Cecchetti, Varganova and French school technique differences is included where needed. Most of the terms are in french which is the universal vocabulary of ballet since King Louis XIV. There are also some line drawings to illustrate various positions which are also useful. A must for the aspiring dancer.
Very good book for beginner dancers! This book is really recommended if you are just starting out dancing, and need help with the basic dance terms! This book has every term you would need to know for dancing, really good book and good quality as well.
I have not been dancing for that long only 3 years (I will be on pointe this summer :) and I really wanted a book to boost my terminology so I ould be that much better. this book was all I had hoped for and all but there was only one problem. since I don't know everything this book was just a little to complicated for me. like some of the regular words that would show up were maître or maitresse de ballet or battement frappe pointe double and this was the definition for that last word, double battement struck and pointed. the working foot beats sur le cou-de-pied devant and derriere or vice versa, before being extended in the open position pointe tendue a terre. know I could understand what they were saying and all. I just couldn't go, "oh ok let me start practicing that move now." because its just a little to technical for me. so if you are a medium to beginner ballet dancer START WITH AN EAISER BOOK TO LEARN THE BASICS!!
I am an adult who has loved ballet since the age of 7. I think this book is great. There are pages and pages of the definitions for various positions and ballet terms then a few pages with positions drawn out. You could simply look up everything online, but I love having it in book format.
