Okay. This book's author identifies his story as lesbian fiction. Main character, Set. Julia Mullers is a lesbian, the story is a murder mystery in a steam-punk, alternate timeline, world. She's 25 and good at her job. The world built by the author is stark and it happens during the night shift. And it's a dank and dark place. The sense of oppression is tangible.I don't know if there was an editor. I was hard pressed at times to understand a sentence or paragraph and had to re-read several times.It was an engaging story. I kept reading because I wanted to know the end of the story (even fighting through the bad edits).I won't read the next installment because I don't want to go through the bad edits again.And...this isn't a first foray into writing for this author, so it's disappointing.
These books are the antithesis of judging a book by its cover. The covers are beautiful professionally designed artwork. The contents are appalling. I can’t believe that there aren’t proofreaders, beta readers or editors that have touched these books. As for it being promoted as lesbian fiction—that’s a downright offensive joke. I made my notes and highlights live but slowed down after the 12th chapter.I’ve only ever said this once before in decades—-don’t bother.
I was looking for something different to read in lesfic and boy did I find it.This was a very great read. My first steampunk novel and it was exciting and totally different. Now i cant wait to read the sequel and more of his work.
I enjoyed this book very much. It was fast moving and I liked the characters. It was hard for me to put the book down. Julia was a strong heroine.
