The story of Simon continues, a man who has a lot going on in his life, and it's not all perfect. Skin cancers are a constant concern, keeping up the property is a constant concern, keeping the horses sound and going...all these things plus his boyfriend keep him busy. He finds out about a distance horse race in Mongolia, and a breeches company has a slot for a person to ride under their sponsorship. While he's never done any distance riding to speak of, he is an expert horseman, and this looks pretty easy.Except he doesn't like strange food (I'm with him there!), isn't very adaptable to extreme travel, and Mongolia is a very strange place. Competitors are warned about motorcycle-mounted bandits that may mug them for their valuable GPS units, wolves, rough terrain, and more. They can rely on the kindness of locals for overnight stays if they don't make it to the next organized stopover, and this is an eye-opener for him. He did plan ahead and include some small toys to give to his hosts' children, and manages with his Mongolian-English dictionary. Who knew there was such a thing? And what if the Mongolians are illiterate? This is totally different from any horse competition he's ever done, and he hopes it will give him some positive name value in eventing and horse sports in general. He's chosen his charity that will benefit from his ride. The new breeches are fabulous, at least so far, and he didn't have a reaction to the rabies shots. Yes, rabies shots are recommended for Mongolian travel, in case you get bitten by canines, both tame and wild. Of course, rabies shows up in other species, too, but equine-born rabies is pretty rare. However you couldn't tell it from these little feral fiends that are provided for the race, some lazy, some that are barely broke, and some that are definitely out to destroy their riders. Nobody told them about the race. Now each rider must manage his beast, monitor its pulse and respiration, and assure that it's not over-stressed by the miles. These horses are pony-sized, but have the hearts of dragons...and the dispositions to match.
This book, like the others in the series, is populated by interesting horses & people, and presented through the eyes of a protagonist who I simply adore. Simon- our hero- does a lot of growing up in this novel, as he heads out of the country with a backpack full of pop tarts and peanut butter! I don’t want to spoil anything, but this book is great... Simon is as funny as always, and his adventures in Mongolia were so entertaining I finished the book in just 24 hours!
I have read the entire series and have a love/hate relationship with Simon. As he grows as a person, so does my admiration for him. It is rare to find a person so complex in fiction these days, and this author has a some serous talent.
I've read all novels Mary Pagones has pubished so far, and I really appreciate how true to life and fully developed her main characters are. This, the 4th in her eventing series does not disappoint. The descriptions of the experiences and inner monolog of Simon's journey through the Mongolian Derby was truly outstanding. I read this in practically one sitting. I really hope there are more novels to come about Simon - I feel like we're not finished!
I've just reread all the Fortune's Fools books and I can't recommend them highly enough. Mary Pagones is a wonderful wordsmith who fleshes out characters as if they were sitting around the dinner table with you. Her take on the horse scene is accurate and knowledgeable. Reading these books really is the next best thing to riding.
I always love spending time with Simon. The Mongol Derby was amazing.
I’ve loved this series the whole way through, especially as a male eventer. Mary’s characters are all so distinct and real, anyone in the horse world knows each of them in their own life.I won’t give away any plot points, but the growth in Simon is great in this book. Can’t wait for the next one!Alex Rodeck
I have always been interested in the Mongolian derby And Mary brings it to life! Can't wait for Simons next adventure.
