The story of Simon continues, a man who has a lot going on in his life, and it's not all perfect. Skin cancers are a constant concern, keeping up the property is a constant concern, keeping the horses sound and going...all these things plus his boyfriend keep him busy. He finds out about a distance horse race in Mongolia, and a breeches company has a slot for a person to ride under their sponsorship. While he's never done any distance riding to speak of, he is an expert horseman, and this looks pretty easy.Except he doesn't like strange food (I'm with him there!), isn't very adaptable to extreme travel, and Mongolia is a very strange place. Competitors are warned about motorcycle-mounted bandits that may mug them for their valuable GPS units, wolves, rough terrain, and more. They can rely on the kindness of locals for overnight stays if they don't make it to the next organized stopover, and this is an eye-opener for him. He did plan ahead and include some small toys to give to his hosts' children, and manages with his Mongolian-English dictionary. Who knew there was such a thing? And what if the Mongolians are illiterate? This is totally different from any horse competition he's ever done, and he hopes it will give him some positive name value in eventing and horse sports in general. He's chosen his charity that will benefit from his ride. The new breeches are fabulous, at least so far, and he didn't have a reaction to the rabies shots. Yes, rabies shots are recommended for Mongolian travel, in case you get bitten by canines, both tame and wild. Of course, rabies shows up in other species, too, but equine-born rabies is pretty rare. However you couldn't tell it from these little feral fiends that are provided for the race, some lazy, some that are barely broke, and some that are definitely out to destroy their riders. Nobody told them about the race. Now each rider must manage his beast, monitor its pulse and respiration, and assure that it's not over-stressed by the miles. These horses are pony-sized, but have the hearts of dragons...and the dispositions to match.

This book, like the others in the series, is populated by interesting horses & people, and presented through the eyes of a protagonist who I simply adore. Simon- our hero- does a lot of growing up in this novel, as he heads out of the country with a backpack full of pop tarts and peanut butter! I don’t want to spoil anything, but this book is great... Simon is as funny as always, and his adventures in Mongolia were so entertaining I finished the book in just 24 hours!

I have read the entire series and have a love/hate relationship with Simon. As he grows as a person, so does my admiration for him. It is rare to find a person so complex in fiction these days, and this author has a some serous talent.

I've read all novels Mary Pagones has pubished so far, and I really appreciate how true to life and fully developed her main characters are. This, the 4th in her eventing series does not disappoint. The descriptions of the experiences and inner monolog of Simon's journey through the Mongolian Derby was truly outstanding. I read this in practically one sitting. I really hope there are more novels to come about Simon - I feel like we're not finished!

I've just reread all the Fortune's Fools books and I can't recommend them highly enough. Mary Pagones is a wonderful wordsmith who fleshes out characters as if they were sitting around the dinner table with you. Her take on the horse scene is accurate and knowledgeable. Reading these books really is the next best thing to riding.

I always love spending time with Simon. The Mongol Derby was amazing.

I’ve loved this series the whole way through, especially as a male eventer. Mary’s characters are all so distinct and real, anyone in the horse world knows each of them in their own life.I won’t give away any plot points, but the growth in Simon is great in this book. Can’t wait for the next one!Alex Rodeck

I have always been interested in the Mongolian derby And Mary brings it to life! Can't wait for Simons next adventure.

Review

"Don Cohen has done an excellent job of presenting an overview of the various diagnostic, evaluative, and therapeutic approaches to the cranium, the sacrum, the dura matter envelope, and the fluid which it encloses. He is one of those rare individuals who has a real and true sense of the human body and what it is about. He also has a deep appreciation of the fact that the human body is not living in isolation. He knows both intellectually and intuitively about the interrelations between spirit, mind, and body."-John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M., Founder, Upledger Institute, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

From the Back Cover

Grounded in ancient hands-on methods of diagnosis and treatment while encompassing the innovations of the early experimental osteopaths, craniosacrally-based treatment is now one of the most successful and fastest-growing approaches to mind-body healing. Providing access to the unity of structure and function in the organism, such therapy offers a simple, direct, and non-dogmatic means for tapping the body's inherent intelligence in a fluid and spontaneous way. We should not presume that the techniques in this book deal solely with the bones of the cranium, the spine, and the lower back. The craniosacral system is no less than the structural aspect of the central nervous system. Its methods originate in neural behavior and emotional energy and include their manifestations throughout the tissues and organs of the body. Both a medical system with precise anatomical criteria and a therapeutic art requiring a practitioner to feel, interpret, and move energy, modern craniosacral therapy offers a unique way to perceive and influence the structural configuration of the brain itself in its relationship to the body's architecture.

A clear introduction to basic concepts of Osteopathic Medicine and the specific anatomy/physiology of craniosacral therapy, This book focuses on understanding the history of craniosacral therapy through anecdotes and case histories. Specific techniques and outcomes are then presented. A good, easy to read, introduction to craniosacral therapy by one of the first people trained by Dr. John Upledger, the "father" of modern craniosacral therapy.

I was trained in Cranial Sacral 14 years ago and have kept using it over the years, but now that I am practicing this more full time I ordered a few books for reference and progression of the practice. This book is a really amazing guide that breaks down the systems, the bones and even goes over basic techniques in the end of the book. Easy to read and follow, great reference book for sure!

I'm in a class for Cranial/Sacral with a teacher who isn't very good at teaching. Frustrated with the lack of materials, a general disorderly method of giving what he does know, and his very slim instruction in palpation, I began a search for a book to help me get what I wanted. This book is fantastic! It clearly lays out the 10 step protocol and gives great tips for discovering the rhythm through palpation. The illustrations are helpful as well. I was quickly loosing any interest in a subject (CST) that I have been wanting to learn for years but this book saved the day! I showed it to my teacher and he said that it would be a good text book to use for his classes in the future. I hope, for their sake, he does.

Thought it would be more detailed...but it is still good. Thank you.

Thank you

Very good and educational. Wanted to further my knowledge for my massage practice. Well written.

layout and write up of various hikes not very easy to read/follow. there are other books out there like the Moon Outdoor series 101 Hikes in the San Francisco Bay Area that are superior in layout and ease of reading/following which is really the point of getting a guide book. If the guide book is not that easy to follow what is the point of getting that guidebook?

I bought this book based on reviews on this site and others. The descriptions are better than average, but the maps are of poor quality. Sorry, but good maps are ESSENTIAL for hiking in unfamiliar places! I've seen better maps of neighborhood walks in Frommer's and other general-use guides, and the maps of the trails in the SF part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area (specifically the Coastal Trail), which were what I bought the book for, were inadequate. From experience, it is not good when you are reduced to hiking with a book in one hand for the description of the trail, because if that's all you have, you'll get turned around at some point. I'm still looking for a better guidebook.

As with every guidebook in the respected Trailblazer travel book series (Alpine Sierra Trailblazer, Kauai Trailblazer, Maui Trailblazer, Oahu Trailblazer, Hawaii the Big Island Trailblazer, and No Worries Hawaii: A Vacation Planning Guide), the Golden Gate Trailblazer is fun to read, beautiful to look at (the remarkable black-and-white photography provides a wonderful sense of place), and ever so useful. A large number of hikes, walks, jogs, and bike rides are thoughtfully organized not only by location but also by the characteristics that set them apart from each other. The "Best Of" section lists choices for a wide variety of preferences: wildflowers, forested creeks, shorebird watching, coastal bluffs, bay side strolls, gardens, city life, and family rides, to name a few. Each selection is further detailed with carefully crafted directions both for getting to the starting point and for heading down the road or trail (I find the author's directions more than adequate--they flat out get the job done, but map freaks may feel more comfortable supplementing their guidance with the appropriate map). The Sprouts know the neighborhood like the back of their hand and have walked and hiked this area for many years. Their deep knowledge of their subject enhances the activities they describe--you'll learn a lot of history along the way, that's for sure. Practical details are in abundance, from things to do with the kids to cleverly presented advice and opinion based on years of experience. You're unlikely to just bump into many of the activities they've included--the Golden Gate Trailblazer will help you find and enjoy an array of experiences most tourists will forever miss. Even long-time locals will find lots of exciting new ideas they had no idea were in their own backyard. A great resource. Pick up one and enjoy.

Good things about this book are:1. It provides not-so-obvious trails that alot of San Franciscans don't even know about along Lands End. Most locals crowd Chrissy Field and don't realize that places like Fort Funston are just minutes away. The beach there is outstanding.2. It covers hundreds of trails all within one hour's driving distance from San Francisco. I can jump on my bike in the morning and be dozens of places within two hours.3. The book has everything packed into one compact reference. For biking, it's one of the best sources around. A dream machine for day hiking.4. Dog owners, there are two pages devoted to doggie trails. They haven't forgotten families and have filled eight pages with easy kid walks. Our favorites are out in Point Reyes along the lagoons.5. Good overall maps with detailed insets for places like the Golden Gate Park. For tourists or anyone living in the Bay Area this book is a real find.

Our first trip to San Francisco in June was one of the best relaxing/invigorating vacations we've ever had. For almost three weeks we explored this city and only rented a car for the last three days to see the towns and coastal villages of Marin County. We were able to get around easily riding public buses and ferries. The maps in the book were very handy and well placed and only when we were downtown did we supplement with a detailed street map.We took the shoreline hikes in the Presidio and took a day to walk the entire length of the Golden Gate Park. People watching from various sidewalk cafes was also a pastime. My boyfriend and I saw and learned more things about the area than most locals do in a lifetime. This book was our pennypinching friend and we recommend it to you.

Our carcamping trip to the West Coast last month was a big success. Our first stop in the San Francisco Bay Area was Muir Woods where the Trailblazer untangled the trail system for us. Our Marin campsite was a perfect staging area for our daily outings. This book is fully illustrated with photos and locater maps and they've even included a little California history to spice it up. Clean graphics, well organized. You can dip in and out of the pages and get clued in on the fly. The route from Fisherman's Wharf to the Golden Gate Bridge by bike provided beautiful views of the bay. For us an excellent way to see the area on a limited budget.

I've lived in San Francisco since 1995. It was a real shock when I first opened this book last week and found all the walks I was missing. Even though I consider myself a local by now I had never been to Alcatraz or Angel Island or Kirby Cove, a little beach right under the bridge that no one knows about. It even lists little out of the way places in Golden Gate Park, my stomping grounds for long runs after work. Where this book excels is its organization and straightforward presentation. It lays out all the cards in a nice simple style. And it's pretty to look at.
