If you don't need an encyclopedia to help you travel, but a quick guide book - look no further. I was in Amsterdam for a week on business. This book was a gem. It fits in a man's back pants pocket or inside jacket pocket. There is a large number of attractions and plenty of local information listed. For attractions it has the basics needed to figure out what you want to see and go there. For local information (I had no Dutch, and my German was just a hindrance), it has good public transit info, phrases, cultural tips, and it's streamlined to help you find what you need to do and get it done. The pull-out map was great, it gives a fine overview of downtown all the way out to Schipol, and there are lots of blowup maps for various parts of the city within the book itself.
Planning my first trip to Amstrdam and the Lonely Planet travel guides were recommended to me. After looking at different travel guides it did seem that they were the best value - ratings and price. Have been reading the guide and it is very detailed, good layout and has some good recommendations. The map included is also easy to read, very detailed, and folds up nice and small. Excited to put the information to use when I visit.
Excellent guide to Amsterdam that allows you to see places of interest grouped together by areas of the city. Additional information about restaurants, bars, etc. , for these areas is invaluable. Information about specific trams, buses and their stops for sites plus the map is very useful. I used this guide in a daily basis and would highly recommend it.
I lived in Amsterdam for a year and this was my life savor! The map of the city was very helpful and finding locations wasn't a problem.It was easy to carry and small enough to keep in a small to medium bag. If you need something small and informative, I recommend getting this book!
I've used Lonely Planet before but for the Pocket Amsterdam version, I really didn't like the map. Some of the areas we were trying to locate were cut off! If you're looking to just stay in the middle of the tourist section, I guess it would work but if you have any inkling to go say past the museums, then you're SOL.

Very convenient guide that fits in your pocket. We used it extensively on our trip. Even restaurant suggestions were greatand mat hed some of the reviews i had found online.
