This short 134 page book "The seven sayings of the cross" by Arthur Pink focus,s entirely on those 7 sayings or Jesus. These sayings are more important (if that,s possible ) than the rest of His preaching seeing the dying declaration of a man is deemed truth by most courts and can be used as evidence.I do have a few disagreements as he seems to say Jesus had no power on earth to forgive sins because he was lifted up off the ground (page 13)but he countermanded that opinion on page 30 and 41.On page 16 he says Christ did not personally forgive his enemies. On page 17 he says Christ never forgave where there was no repentance--I disagree strongly on both of these points. On page 27 he says "Salvation by grace--sovereign,irrestable free grace is illustrated in the New Testament by example as well as precept"--Salvation is Irrestable ?--dead wrong. There were a few nuggets of Bible Gold as he proves you must have head faith before you have heart faith,Jesus never did any miracles for his own comfort or ease and the fact Father God did not spare His Son when sin was found on Him,so what hope do the unsaved have. All in all a very deep and insightfull paperback, just beware of his Calvinistic tendency.

Christians have a deep and abiding fascination with the cross. Though 2000 years have passed since Christ hung on that cross, Christians continue to grapple with its deepest meanings and continue to seek to apply its lessons to their lives. Of the countless thousands of books written on the subject, A.W. Pink's The Seven Sayings of the Saviour on the Cross stands as one of the few true classics. In this book Pink looks at each of the seven words Jesus spoke while hanging in agony. In his introduction to the book Pink says, "The death of Christ...was unique, miraculous, supernatural. In the chapters which follow we shall hearken to the words which fell from his lips while he hung upon the cross - words which make known to us some of the attendant circumstances of the great tragedy; words which reveal the excellencies of the one who suffered there; words in which is wrapped up the gospel of our salvation; and words which inform us of the purpose, the meaning, the sufferings, and the sufficiency of the death divine." He dedicates a chapter to each of the words of forgiveness, salvation, affection, anguish, suffering, victory and contentment. In every case he spends some time discussing the meaning of the word and usually equal time applying these words to the faith of the individual Christian. Far from "mere" theology, this book is intensely practical and immediately applicable. The Seven Sayings of the Saviour on the Cross deserves the accolades given to it. It bears repeated readings and is ideal for group study (and, indeed, I led a group of over 100 people reading it in tandem). It is worthy of a spot in the collection of every Christian.

This book is written so well. I didn't know what I would find when I started to read a book written so long ago, but I have been amazed. The language is superlative, it is easy to follow, and it of course is extremely Biblical. You can use it as a Bible study or just a comforting read. You can also use it to have conversations with the lost. I definitely will read more from A W Pink.

This is a great, highly readable book. It is short enough that you could make it a Holy Week devotional if you wanted to. I think it was about a dollar for the Kindle version. The insights are theologically sound and it is a great read. Highly recommended

Great book about Jesus's last words to us while He was on the cross dying for our sins. I read it as devotional book.

This book takes the reader far beyond the superficial reading of Jesus' last words on the Cross. You are taken on a journey to seeing the depth of the Father's love; the depth of the love and obedience of the Son; and the sacrifices made to secure the salvation of all who put their full trust in Jesus Christ. You will not only be blessed by reading this book... you will want to re-read this book.Truly, if Jesus Christ be God (and He is) and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make to Him.

This is the second time I've purchased this book. I gave my original copy to a friend who was ill and had some time to read while recovering. PInk's insights are wonderful to read, and it really adds a new dimension to the narrative. I simply can't recommend it highly enough. If you have a theology section in your home library The Seven Sayings needs to be on the shelf. Highly recommended.

This is a wonderful and very insightful book. It can be read again and again with great profit every time.

#104,314 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I LOVE THIS BOOK ! I first purchased the audio version, which was very well done. So well done that i had to get the print version so that I can highlight and really study it. It is so easy to find fault with everyone else in your life regarding ability to listen, but I found this book to be invaluable when applied to MYSELF, and i have always considered myself a good listener ! This could be a marriage saver ! APPLY what you read, PRACTICE what is suggested, and life can get better ! Technology is ruining us.

This book WILL change your life and the lives of everyone you touch. I listened to it on Audible.com, which was ideal, because the audio version is well narrated and can truly "sink in" more than text can. It covers much more than what one would expect from a "listening" self-help book. It is not just about "active listening" with playback to the speaker every few minutes. It is about deep listening and truly "getting" what someone else needs. Everyone playing the role of spouse, parent, child, teacher, employer, or friend should read this book and put its wise ideas into practice!

Are you a bad listener? Cause I am. Or, at least I was before reading this book. Although it may not be a cure-all, it has helped me to be more aware of my thoughts while someone is speaking to me. Instead of normally wandering from one thought to the next, I now make a conscious effort to truly listen, which Dr. Nichols brings to light in his book; The Lost Art of Listening. While this book has helped me, I also have a few criticisms I must share. After reading through the other reviews for this book, I am surprised by how many thought the examples were so clear. While I can concur to some degree, I thought the examples were sudden and unexpected. In one paragraph he would be talking about an important aspect in listening, and in the next you find yourself in the middle of an example with no direction or forewarning. However, once I re-oriented myself and read through the example, I found it to be helpful in applying the meaning of what Dr. Nichols was trying to get across to my life.As a current student majoring in Communication, I have learned a thing or two about communication styles and the reasons why people react differently to certain words or phrases than others. One of these reasons is “trigger words,” which are words than incite a positive or negative reaction in someone. I have learned that one of my negative trigger words is that word people tend to call women which also happens to be another name for a female dog. I do not appreciate Dr. Nichols using this word so frequently, even for examples sake. It does not seem completely necessary to get the point across.Despite these criticisms, there were a few points in his book I really appreciated him adding, for example, his few pages on the differences between how society thinks men are supposed to listen vs. how women are supposed to listen; men give advice, women sympathize, etc. He made sure to say how important it is to listen without these pre-supposed ideas in mind and he asked the right questions, and for that I want to say a big Thank You!Overall, The Lost Art of Listening is an honest book that has helped me see how I listen, why I listen the way I do, and how I can improve the way I listen for future interactions.

This is a very good book. It is targeted to the lay person and contains some interesting self-tests and listening excercizes. It has proven useful on a personal level to improve understanding and communications between intimates. But it deals with listening in general and can be applied in any situation in which listening is necessary. Which is about every situation imaginable.A terrific choice for this topic.

I am a Dr and have practiced for 20 years, I have put ideas into practice right away, already seeing the positive fruit of change

Read the Epilogue first then again at the end. This section gives such a great philosophical overview (the author would hate that reference) and puts you in the open state to look critically at yourself and make some great changes. I will buy copies for my recently married children.

As a personal mastery trainer and coach I highly recommend this book. Everyone and every relationship can benefit from understanding and applying the knowledge professor Nichols puts forth. It's an easy read and is very practical. I have been teaching listening skills for two decades and learned how to listen better by reading this book!

I am really not the self-help type, but this is probably one of the best books ever on how to communicate with others - be it your partner, children, parents, friends, co-workers - simply everyone. The key is listening - a remarkably difficult skill to develop it turns out. I had the old print version (and loved it) and decided to re-purchase it for my kindle to take on vacation. I was surprised and delighted to see that it had been updated and while some of the text is still the same and a smidgen is now a bit dated (i.e. referring to a book from the 90s) it really doesn't matter because the ideas are so very powerful and timeless. Plus they have added exercises which are simple, but surprisingly difficult because it turns out that listening, really listening is so very hard. Yet it works - whenever I am mindful and really try to listen, the response is almost miraculous.I highly recommend this volume, indeed cannot recommend it highly enough, and go back to it whenever I feel myself slipping - especially with my spouse. It turns out people just want to be heard and while it does not solve everything, it is a helluva start.

I was looking forward to this book, and the premise and general information are good. However, the book was at least 3x longer than necessary (lots of rambling, tangents, and unnecessary repeating of points). And although the author says the book is for anyone, and I agree the basic premise is adaptable for anyone, she didn’t write it in an inclusive way. I found it very family with children focused and from a very privileged point of view. Also, her own preferences of what’s important shine through. All and all, not worth the time.

I saw a Ted talk about this author and book. I think that Ted talk was more interesting and it got the whole book coevered in 15 minutes. I found the book too long and quite boring. I couldn't get myself to finish it. As interested i am in sorting out my time and life priorities i guess this book didn't do that for me. Sure there were some great points and that is great learning. But overall i would have liked the book to be cut in half.

It is a time of year that is suitable for reflection with many people slowing down. You undoubtedly want to do achieve something or become something, but doing anything worthwhile has to be done well, and to do that, takes time.“Being busy has become the explanation of choice for all sorts of things,” says the author, Laura Vanderkam. We are too busy to read, spend quality time with our families, attend to our devotions, keep fit, and have a vibrant social life. Is all this only possible if you can find a part-time career paying full-time rates? Or as many work-life balance protagonists tell us, we need to lower our expectations to get it all in.Amazon list 35,000 books on time management, so why bother with reviewing this one? Because I think Vanderkam has insights worth considering.A Harvard Business Review article titled, ‘The Dangerous Allure of the 70-Hour Workweek’ suggests that the 60-hour workweek is no longer the route to the top, it “is now considered practically part-time.” But the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics study in which work is actually recorded, shows this to be wrong.Americans sleep about 8 hours a night, just as we did 40 years ago, and we work a lot less than we think we do – on average ‘full-time’ logs 35–43 hours per week. Another study of those who really do work over 60-hour workweeks reports finding no more than 1.7 million Americans, just over 1% of the workforce.“I’m more interested in the woman down the street,” writes Vanderkam, “who—without benefit of fame, outsized fortune, or a slew of personal assistants—is running a successful small business, marathons, and a large and happy household.” We all have exactly the same amount of time. When we do meet the “woman down the street” we can only marvel at why and how she is able to fill her time with so many meaningful things, while others just dream of 15 minutes to take a bubble bath. This is the central question that this book answers. The book reports on the lives of many women (and a few men,) who seem to do it all. Vanderkam explains that “the point of these stories is not to make anyone feel bad or lazy. Rather, I view these stories as liberating, particularly as a young(ish) person trying to build my career and family—as well as nurture my personal passions for running, singing, and other things—in a world that continually laments how hard it is to do it all.”Here are some facts. There are 168 hours in a week – (24 hours a day times the 7 days in the week.) Planned well these 168 hours are sufficient to accommodate full-time work, intense involvement with your family, rejuvenating leisure time, adequate sleep, and everything else that you wish to accomplish. Do the math: even if you actually put in 8 hours of real, focused work each day, (see the facts above!) that leaves you 128 hours each week. If you sleep 8 hours a day so you are always fresh and well rested, that leaves you 88 hours each week. Put in an hour of exercise a day and you have 81 hours left. Spend 3 hours a day on housework and you have 60 hours each week… You get the point. We work less than we think we do, and we have more time than we think we have. The hard, but hopeful truth is that you can have all that time to allocate as you choose, but not without effort. Why do we think we are so time-starved? We lie. We are in so many ways, extraordinarily inefficient. One of Vanderkam’s hyper-successful women down the street, Theresa Daytner, put it this way: “Here’s what I think is the difference, I know I’m in charge of me. Everything that I do, every minute I spend is my choice. If I’m not spending my time wisely, I fix it, even if it’s just quiet time.”What if we approached time differently: started with the unfilled 168 hours and viewed every minute, as our own choice? Instead of asserting firmly that we cannot do everything, we tell ourselves that we won’t be doing these things, because they are just not a priority in our life. When you say “I don’t have time,” you are making someone else responsible for your time: a manager, a client, your family. When something is not a priority, it turns those 168 hours back into a blank slate, to be filled as you choose it to be - with the things that you have decided matter to you.Recording how you spend your time as a time-diary study is a valuable tool, because it forces you to face the reality that a day has 24 hours and a week has 168. Everything we do must be accommodated within these limits. It will also force us to face another reality: we overestimate work and housework, and underestimate how much we sleep and how much leisure or discretionary time we actually have.Consider this: The problem may not be that you are overworked or under rested, it may well be that you have absolutely no idea how you spend your 168 hours. Perhaps you can be in better shape than you have ever been, because you’re sleeping enough and exercising enough. Perhaps you don’t have to choose between working to climb the career ladder and building a ladder for your kid’s tree- house, because there is plenty of time for both.To do this you will need to clarify two issues: what are your most important priorities, and how do you really allocate your time. Only then can you take time out to plan how you will use your 168 hours. While 168 hours is a lot of time, time is a non-renewable resource to be used very carefully.Readability Light -+--- SeriousInsights High --+-- LowPractical High -+--- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy and is the author of Strategy that Works.

I can't believe the negative reviews on this book. They are way off. However to give you a fair warning - this books isn't for everyone. If your not open minded, not looking to improve the use of your most valuable resource (time), you're absolutely in love with how you currently spend your time, looking for a easy done for you shortcut with no work or thinking, or you think that you have no control over your life and would rather have others control your time than this book is NOT for you. It's a book for people that want to "own" time rather than be victimized by the passing of it.School is never out for the "pro" so as a small business owner I find myself always working to improve my time management skills. One of the ways I do this is by reading a time management book every 12 months and have been doing this since 1999. Having read a handful of these books I'd recommend this book near the top of the list. It'll either be a great introduction to time management or it very good refresher. Either way it's worth the time to read. It's a very rewarding and eye opening experience to complete the exercises in this book and to reflect on how I could use the ideas to improve my life. The key to this book is to put the time into the exercises in the book and you'll get a huge value back out.

168 hours. We all have them every week. How you choose to use them is up to you. This book is much more than time management. It has helped me to dream again and figure out which priorities will fulfill me and which are just time drains. Read it and you wont regret it!

I picked up this book because I was starting to sound like a broken record... "I don't have enough time.I never have enough time. I can't exercise between work, school and a baby". Within weeks, my household started to run better and I was less stressed. In months, I've found time to do everything that I want to get done in a week, and my husband and daughter have benefited as a result. Certainly, as many point out, some of the solutions aren't for everyone. The author does readily suggest outsourcing a lot of things, which isn't always affordable. But there is so much more to the book than this one point. It shouldn't stop you from getting the book and giving it a good read. It doesn't promise quick fixes, but it is an entirely new perspective on how to think about your time and your priorities. Happy reading!

Many great tips in this book. Occasionally strayed to upper class. Only religious examples were Christian

Changed my life!! I buy it as a gift for others; so helpful.

I like this collection, I'm brazilian and from the same city that the little boy in the book and our life weren't this way. I found that the writer describes a child from a favela in Rio de Janeiro, with a carnival reference from Rio de Janeiro and not from Recife. It's like describing someone from the Texas, Utah, California, an exemple and saying he's a typical New Yorker, or oposite. :/

This leveled reader presents a wonderful introduction to Brazil. Readers meet Marco who lives in Brazil. The book shows a map with Brazil's location within South America and then gives details about the natural wonders of the country. The rain forest is described including the tribes and animals that live there and the problems created by urbanization. The important rules to protect the rain forest are emphasized. The book also covers the coasts, cities, and people that make up Brazil. One aspect that children will enjoy is that Marco explains much about Brazil's food, history, sports, and culture through a typical day at school and then later when he returns home. Brazilian history is handled with great sensitivity regarding native Brazilians and the issue of slavery in a way that children in primary grades will understand. Living in Brazil concludes with important facts about the country.

This book is a nice intro to Brazil for people familiar with Brazilian culture who want to introduce it to their kids. My daughter is 3.5 years old and she rather likes the book. It's not perfect (for example, most Brazilians don't eat cheese bread for breakfast). Also, I think the whole thing about how the kid's mom works the night shift at the hospital and therefore is asleep during the day is totally lost on my daughter. The perennial work life balance seems like a detail of interest to adults but not to kids. But, okay, those criticisms given, it's overall a reasonable introduction to some Brazilian history and customs.

I am very impressed! I was raised in Brazil and bought this book for my american children. We all loved it. Very well thought and legit. I got to explain to my children some things that are different in Brazil like “brazilians eat dinner super late” and they had a kick when they recognized some things/actions that we do as a family because we are a multicultural family. They asked me to buy all the others Living in.... books so they can learn about other countries.

Very well written and a true gem in kids books about Brazil. As a Brazilian native, this is a nice way to teach your own kids and a nice token for my kid's friends about my country. I wish I had found this book for my son's birthday so I could give them away in his favor bags. Looking forward to the following books about China and Mexico. I'm definitely purchasing the "Living in... Italy" as well.I'm sure the author researched quite well (and maybe had some consulting help) to write so nicely this little book.

My 7 and 6 yr olds got to visit Brazil for 3 weeks this summer so we got this book to help prep them for their experience. We all like it and read and reread it many times. Look forward to purchasing more books in this series about different countries!

I purchased this book to help my 7 year old son write a heritage report and it was exactly what he needed! A little boy named Marco gives all kinds of useful information and explains it in a way that is very easy for children to understand. Brazil's history, geography, carnival, soccer, schooling, it talks about it all and didn't even bother trying to look elsewhere to help gather information. Wonderful book!!

Beautiful book. Took this to our trip to Brazil to visit family. I love that it shows Manaus, which is often left out in many books about Brazil.

Exquisite photos and technical information. I would recommend this to any veterinary medicine student, practicing veterinarian, or biologist who is interested in reptile medicine and infectious diseases. I would not particularly recommend this to non-vet reptile owners as there are plenty of less technical and less expensive books for owners.I noticed that a page was missing. I was able to exchange the book for a new copy. In the replacement book I discovered that the page was also missing. However, I discovered that the "missing page" was actually not missing; it was just added to the very back of the book. I don't know if that was true for the first copy.

This is a book with alot of detail in histology and cytology. Many valuable knowledge about reptile in the aspect of biology and diseases, these information based on experts in pathology and pathogens of reptiles, also the valuable experience from the author working with reptiles over decades.

As advertised.

My expectation to receive the book was within a week or ten days but I received it with three days. It arrived at the time I really needed it.Many thanks for the prompt and fast deliveryWael Khamas

About the Author

Bernard (B.) Krigstein (1919–1990) was trained as a classical painter, but early on he recognized the artistic potential of the comics medium. He was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2003.Albert B. Feldstein (1925-2014) was an American writer, editor, and artist, best known for his work at EC Comics (particularly in the science fiction genre) and, from 1956 to 1985, as the editor of the satirical magazine Mad.Ray Bradbury was born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1920. Growing up during the Great Depression, Bradbury began writing at the age of 11. Unable to join the military in World War II due to his poor eyesight, he began publishing science fiction stories. In 1947 he married Marguerite McClure and they had four daughters. His career as a writer included such notable works as Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, and I Sing The Body Electric. Primarily known for his successes in science fiction, Bradbury also worked on various horror and mystery stories, as well as screenplays and television scripts. During his lifetime he received numerous awards, including a Pulitzer in 2007. Bradbury passed away in 2012.

Bernard Krigstein was one of the best comic artists of his generation, and the word "artist" really applies in this case, for he was always in search of his own language and style, looking for a way to innovate. In many ocassions he felt his creative impulses by the fixed quantity of pages per story, and the pre-conceived layout (at EC, the artists were given the pages with all the text and dialogues already printed). This didn't stop Krigstein from trying to find a way to persue his ambitions, and he re-arranged layouts, and even managed to get a couple of extra pages for "Master Race", one of his masterpieces. This situations caused friction with EC editors, who considered him a gifted artist, but a hard one to work with sometimes. After the Wertham affair and the decline of EC, Krigstein worked for other publishers, but he eventually grew so frustrated that he abandoned the world of comics forever. This book collects 30+ stories from Krigstein's tenure with EC comics. Fantagraphic's EC Library series feature black and white reproductions, something which doesn't always work fine, because the artists crafted their pages with colour in mind; thus, some pages lack the neccesary level of contrast when printed in black and white. In the case of Krigstein, some stories look as amazing as they did in colour, due to his approach to different textures and other experiments (he was very keen on Zip-a-tone).I wish we could have a complete Krisgstein collection one of these days, but we should thank that there are still people like Fantagraphics, who do their best to make these pieces of art available to the public again.Summing up, some of the best comic pages ever created are found in this collection. Not a bad deal at all.(For more of his work, follow the suggestions made by Diamonddulius in his review, those books are truly splendid).

Not normally listed among the more famous EC artists, this compilation establishes Krigstein among the most brilliant members of that stellar staff. Surprisingly, he drew more than FORTY stories for EC, some of which rank alongside the finest work produced by any of the other more famous geniuses like Wood, Williamson, Crandall, Severin, Craig, etc, etc.

This series by Fantagraphics is so cool; each EC artist is being showcased in B/W. The stories are literate, and Krigstein's art is masterful. I have all the volumes in the series.

This Fantagraphics/EC series never disappoints, but this collection is really something special. 32 of the 44 stories Krigstein did for EC are collected here, in stark b&w. Krigstein biographer Greg Sadowski writes the opening analysis of the stories, while SC Ringgenberg pens the closing bio of the artist. Also included is a rare sci-fi 3-D story, specially reconstructed for this volume! As usual, the editors of this series have all the bases covered. Krigstein's story is unique and interesting, an intelligent artist who saw the potential in cartooning before most, yet was thwarted at almost every attempt he made to use the artform. The closest he ever got was the work he did at EC. Students of cartooning in particular will find much of value in this book, as some of the things Krigstein was attempting in these pages still seems fresh and original. A great companion to the two books that the aforementioned Sadowski edited for Fantagraphics: B. Krigstein, Vol. 1, 1919-1955 ,Messages in a Bottle: Comic Book Stories by B. Krigstein ... highest recommendation!!

If you've ever seen or heard Krigstein's name before, it's very likely that it was in association with the title story of this collection, and not without good reason. "Master Race" is a superb example of what the comic form can do, and as such, is still oftentimes cited as proof of the legitimacy of the once (and still occasionally) shunned artform, even over sixty years later. However, "Master Race" was not the only story Krigstein produced for EC, nor was it the only one of artistic merit. Here you'll find well over two dozen stories beautifully reprinted in black and white, showcasing the unique talent of a lesser-known artist who came to EC a little later in the game.I think reading these stories you can tell, as with the rest of EC's stable of artists, that great efforts were made to give Krigstein scripts that suited his talents specifically. It's no coincidence that he tended to illustrate stories that were perhaps more mature than your standard EC fare, both in plot and tone. The more complicated the script the more sophisticated his technique seems to become, especially his use of zip-a-tone, which he mastered at a level far beyond what most others ever managed. His best efforts tend to be the science fiction stories, as well as the suspense or "psychological horror" stories written by scripters such as Johnny Craig and Carl Wessler. Sadly, the artwork begins to suffer in the later parts of the book, becoming less focused, lazy, clearly far below what he was capable of. The reasons for this are detailed in the book, but I'll briefly remind you that by 54-55 the funny book industry was in a state of upheaval to say the least. The decline in quality of the later stories is a bummer, but there's still plenty of great material here. Seriously, these are some of the best comic stories I've ever read! All in all, I'd have to say that this is my favorite book of the EC library so far. People have tried, but nobody - and I mean nobody - draws comics like Bernie Krigstein.
