About the Author
Anatoly Kuznetsov (1929-1979) was a Soviet writer best known for Babi Yar, a documentary novel that described his experiences as a child in German-occupied Kiev, Ukraine and his observations of the massacres that took place nearby. As an adult, chafing under Soviet censorship, Kuznetsov defected from the Soviet Union and continued to publish under the pseudonym A. Anatoli.

The author was a 12 year old boy living in Kiev, in the Ukraine, when on September 21, 1941, the city was occupied by the Nazis. Anatoli survives the mass killings in Babi Yar, a ravine where the Germans, assisted by the Ukrainian National Police, executed the Jewish population, then whomever they pleased. He escapes the forced deportation for slave labor to Germany, survives hunger, cannibalism and the fierce retaking of Kiev by the Red Army. Before the war, Kiev had a population of about 900,000. At the end of the Nazi occupation, around 180,000 remained. Babi Yar did not survive. As soon as the war ended, the ravine was filled in and a main road passes over it. The Central Committee of the Ukrainian Communist Party, of which Nikita Khrushchev was then in charge of, considered that the people who died in Babi Yar did not deserve a memorial. Also, all Soviet prisoners of war who survived the German prison camps were sent off automatically to camps in Siberia as traitors who had surrendered to the enemy and not fought to the death. So much for being liberated. At the end of the book, the author asks "I wonder if we shall ever understand that the most precious thing in this world is a man's life and his freedom? Or is there still barbarism ahead?" Sadly the answer is and always will be "Yes"
This book was recommended to me by my upcoming tour guide in Kiev. It is phenomenal. It not only provides the details of what occurred at Babi Yar but the author went back after he immigrated to the US and revised the document adding notations that the Russian censors removed his original comments.
This is a frightening book. Ukraine, the playground of the Soviets and the Nazis is keenly observed by a young boy whose childhood is lost in the WWII nightmare. For those who want to know more about the current situation in Ukraine, this book is an important stepping stone on the road towards understanding of what Ukraine represents in Eastern European history.
This is an incredible book that exposes one of the horrific events of not only life under Nazism but alsolife under Bolshivism...and all the isms that affected the people of Ukraine ...the microscope targets the areas around Kiev which is on fire even today. It is beautifully written and oh so relevant
A story about killing grounds of the Jews ordered by hitler & his killingmachines. I don' know how anyone could survive this kind of torture.God bless all of them that survived so they could tell the world about allof this killing that was kept a secret from the rest of the world. We need to know about all of this so we can make sure the world knows about it.
Fascinating story about a tragic time.
Babi Yar is a book that all Americans should read. The monstrosities that were endured by the Ukraine people areincomprehensible. May we unite as a world to stop this same thing from happening today.
