I don't do any inline racing, and only got this book to help with my ice speedskating. While the book covers both, it very clearly delineates the technique and position differences between the two. A tremendous effort is put into covering biomechanics - not only where each body part is supposed to be at each stage of the stroke, but also the most common reasons for a specific misalignments. The drills are straightforward and build step by step. They take you all the way from gliding with feet parallel in basic position, to a full push and recovery stroke. Don't expect to get the book and start flying around the track or down the road. The emphasis is on building fundamentals, one skill on top of the other, with a lot of hard work.Bottom line, this is the single best book on speedskating technique that I have read.

Barry Publow has put together a great book for anyone interested in a specific book on skating. The pictures are good, giving the reader a visual for what is being explained. The book is dated, but I have not found anything to compare it too. It is a great resource for anyone looking to get into inline or ice skating. I use the drills frequently to improve my form.

Great. Fast international delivery! Highly recommend!

This is quite simply the most comprehensive resource available in print. From equipment to technique to training to the physics of skating, Publow puts it all in one volume. There are drills to help the skater learn what the proper form should feel like and there are in-depth explanations of the physiology involved with the movements. While this wouldn't be the book I'd recommend for a beginning skater (See Liz Miller's books) it should be the first choice for the ice or inline skater who wants to refine his technique and analyze the details that will make him a stronger, faster skater. A note of caution. Some of the diagrams in the plyometrics section may require several readings to make the most of them.

From the background I had during my competitive years in the sport of inline speedskating, I believe the book is a complete and technical guide to the basic terminology, strategy, and mechanics that are involved with speedskating; both on ice and inline skates. There is heavy usage on photographs to show you the correct way to skate to reach your potential but to achieve what is seen in the picture typically takes years of training with coaches to show you the ways to train your body to achieve the form and stride of an effecient inline skater.I also believe that some of the material is dated regarding the current face of the sport but the book is a staple in the sport and is a worthy look for outsiders and internally at the facets of the sport of inline and ice speedskating. For anyone interested in speedskating either on ice skates or inline skates, this book is the most comprehensive guide from a champion speedskater that covers most facets of the sport.

Book is incredible! just incredible!!! A classic!! Every speed skater sees this book as the Bible, I have read!!! Thank you so much, Barry! I hear he has a new one out too, that expands on this one, so look for the new one also!!! The new one is called, "The Science of Speed" I believe! That's my next purchase!

Only resource I've found with regards to skating technique and training. Barry you should write another.

Very interesting book. Contains technique, drills and power exercises for speed skating. I very satisfied. Book that I ordered is used, so it smells of tobacco. (so rating 4)

I was impressed by how the author distilled this complex topic down to a relatable storyline. The anecdotes were personal and engaging, showcasing the variety of ways genomic medicine can touch all of our lives.Overall, it gave me a sense of hopefulness for the future and what advances we might see, while also bringing to light some of the most controversial questions that we are likely to face with the advance of science. I learned a a tremendous amount form this delightful read, and I think it will be equally enjoyable to a diverse groups of readers, including those without a scientific background. Very well done.

Not readable for nontechnical person such as me

A little too technical in places but very on target and interesting. This is the infancy of genetics solving medical problems. Well written and documented. Average reader might get lost, but for those whose interests lie in genetics, it an excellent example of a glance into our genetic futures.

For those with minimal knowledge of genetics and testing, this book is excellent. However, those of us with a science background and/or many years in the field it is quite simplistic.

Great read. Very well written. One can understand a difficult technical structure

Highly informative but could be improved with closer editing. There were more than a few typos and omissions.

Great read, 4 1/2 stars
