Okay. A lot of folks are going to flip when they see I gave this book 4 stars. However, I never quite use plans when I have them. I always have to modify stuff. And I will with the coop we're building, also. It's close, but not quite what is in this book, so the designs in the book are only guides for me. And that's exactly why I bought the book: I wanted some GUIDES to look over and consider. I knew what kind of wood I had and needed and the basic design I planned to use.Now... Here's the reason I didn't give this book 5 stars: The dimensions shown are trash. In the coops I'm looking at, the measurements are completely wrong. For instance, the Cat House: Length is 6 feet and it contains (from end to end) FOUR 12"x12" nesting boxes. There is no extra space shown. Just the 4 nesting boxes. And it does not look six feet long in the drawing OR the real picture. Mine will be, because that's what I have planned all along.So, I love the book. The ideas and drawings are nice, but I cannot believe anyone would publish something with indicated dimensions so out of measure.
I can't believe I didn't read the reviews of this book before ordering (I usually do that with *everything* I buy) but I was so excited to the chicken coop we wanted to build right on the cover, that I just bought it! What a WASTE of TIME and MONEY!!! It says this is a book of building plans, but it only has 1-3 hand-drawn pictures with the very basic measurements. No step-by-step instructions, no list of materials, no cost estimates, time it takes to build, skill level needed, etc. I mean, I could have drawn the "plan" myself based on the picture I found online and the measurements listed with it. Anyone can draw a box and write "4ft x 8ft" on the lines. :/And OF COURSE for the coop I wanted to build, it says "visit so & so's website to BUY more detailed plans" What a JOKE!!! I should've just bought the plans online in the first place. I didn't need to spend another $15 for this book to tell me that.SOOOOOOOOO angry and disappointed. This book is downright dishonest in my opinion. The "authors" should be ashamed of themselves. This is an idea book, nothing more, and you can find almost all of the coops online in a simple google image search.Its going straight back to amazon and I'm getting my money back.
Other reviewers are correct, the book has no detailed plans, or materials lists. Nonetheless, I found the book to be full of valuable information. Chances are one would have to change and adapt a chosen plan to perfectly fit his or her needs anyway. I own Gail Damerow's book on raising chickens and it gives lots of guidelines on space requirements (I highly recommend this book). After perusing this book for inspiration, and using Gail's book for facts and figures, I got out pencil and paper (and an eraser) and designed my own coop to fit my future flock's size (32) and my chosen management style (mobile coop/free-range).The valuable information I mentioned is in the stories of the individuals from all over who give their management styles, tips and thoughts in the text. I love the idea of over-wintering my future hens in a poly-tunnel greenhouse. With this method, the owners of this flock (from New York state, I believe) had such rich soil the next spring, that they had tomatoes by June! That's an attractive idea to those of us living in the north. This is just one of the many ideas that intrigued me.My local library system has three copies of this book, I had to turn mine in without being able to renew it as I would have liked, because someone had placed a hold on it, all three copies are currently checked out. My advice on buying any book would be to check it out from the library first if possible, then decide if you want to own it. I'm about to spend the $13.57 because I feel the information within is worth it.
HI,I purchased this book because it was supposed to be "plans" but it is NOT!This is a visual vacation featuring chicken coops. The author must have touredaround the countryside and snapped some photos of coops that looked interesting.But the problem is, if you are looking for plans, they are not in this book. thereare a few rough sketches, that is it. I was very dissapointed. Glad I bought on Amazonso I could get my money back. If you are just a board housewife, and want to muse yourselffor a while looking at other peoples chicken coops, and btw, most of them are pretty lame,then this may be something you could use. But if you want real plans and are going to actuallybuild something, you will need to look elsewhere.
We just received our copy of Judy Pangman's book. I was hesitant about ordering it after reading the reviews, but because there were some good ones in the mix I figured I'd take a chance. While I agree that it lacks the formal plans that the title seems to promise, it does include photos, sketches and dimensions, and offers a lot of interesting ideas, often with diagrams, for a variety of poultry-keeping needs.Most people who raise poultry would not choose a chicken coop as their first carpentry project anyway, and the book assumes a certain level of expertise and of comfort with tools, materials, and knowledge of the ways that floors, walls, and rafters go together. We've built numerous sheds and outbuildings so we're comfortable melding concepts from several styles to tailor a coop - or any other structure - to our own needs. But we have lived on our place for many years, have a typical repository of building supplies, new and used, and this book is perfect for people like us. If the reader is in his or her twenties and lacks both the experience and the treasure trove of raw materials it might be a different story.Except for the confusion over the word "plans" in the title, which seems to have bothered a lot of readers, I would have awarded this five stars.
