Alex is a Harvey Girl and has been working at the resort for four years. Most of the Harvey restaurants are designed to get people in and out in a short amount of time, but this one at the Grand Canyon is more about luxury and enjoyment. Embarrassed by her father's adulterous behavior, she wishes he would go away. When Senator Winthrop brings a party of people, her problems grow.Luke has been in love with Alex for quite some time, but she only sees him as a friend. Her view of men has been affected by her father's treatment of her and she feels that all men are the same. Bundling Luke into that category is a little unfair, but Alex has to realize that on her own. One of the Winthrop party has taken a liking to Luke and he can't seem to get rid of her.These two get into a lot of trouble. Winthrop's assistant is willing to do anything, and I mean anything, to make sure the senator gets into the White House and has no conscience. He uses anyone and everyone to accomplish that goal and eliminates anyone who gets in his way. Alex'a mother arrives on the scene and now the stakes have been raised when Alex and her mother are not only threatened by Winthrop's assistant but also by Alex's own father.I enjoyed this book. I found Alex to be a little heartless at times when she would prejudge Luke and have no faith in him. She eventually learns the difference but what will she do about the danger surrounding herself and others at the hotel? Book 2 is called Across the Years and book 3 is called Beneath a Harvest Sky. Looking at the main characters in book 2, it appears that it doesn't have a significant connection to this book and can be read as a standalone or out of order.
Another well written story by Tracie Peterson. This does end in a romance but there is much more going on - political, a man who will do anything to make certain his employer becomes president, women treated as property, and those who truly seek what God wants them to do and what He does not want them to do.Keeps you reading to find out more.FYI - This story was written in the time period between WW1 & WW2 when women were trying to get the vote or already had the right to vote yet while many women were still thought of or treated as just property.
Alexander Keegan tries to stay away from an attachment to any man. Her father has soured her idea of marriage with his shameful, womanizing ways. Why she even catches him in the kitchen shut away with a young woman he’s seducing at the Harvey resort at the Grand Canyon where she works. She’ll never understand how her mother can put up with him. She tells herself Luke Toland is just a friend and often even tries to avoid him, but, when her mother is accused of murder, she may need Luke’s support more than she thought.Tracie Peterson weaves a good story, and she certainly does so here. With threads of conflict, intrigue, romance, mystery, and faith, the cloth has texture, color, and beauty. Alexander learns she can’t automatically assume the worst about every man and that all men aren’t like her father, but it’s a long, rough journey. If you decide to come along for the ride, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
I chose this rating because Tracie Peterson really out did herself in writing this story of Shadows of the Canyon.It was the most exciting story and couldn't put the story down. It took place in Arizona. Alexander know as Alex. Came to work at Fred Harvey Company Restaurant as a Harvey Girl waitress. Her father Rufus Keegan shows up in Arizona to make her life miserable. You see her father loved all women and needed one different one each night. Mrs. Katherine Keegan knew all about his affairs..More happens as the story moves on. Especially, about Luke Toland, Senator Winthrop his daughter Valerie Winthrop, Rufus Keegan, and Joel Harper. There are so many surprises. YOU WILL BE TOTALLY SHOCKED!!!Lee
Just read the first book in the Desert Roses series, Shadows of the Canyon, and like all Tracie Peterson books, very well written, very suspenseful and keeps you on your toes.I find it very strange that no matter who's talking, they all run together, so you really have to pay attention to who's saying what! I've read a lot of books with typos etc. but I think this is the first time I've read an author (or publisher) who allows this! But outside of this, her stories are wonderful. I really enjoyed getting acquainted with the hero, Luke. He filled the bill for being a good ol' cowboy. He was not one of these twangy ah shucks cowboy. He knew how to romance a girl and the right words to say. In fact, he could have talked even more and it wouldn't have hurt my feelings one bit. A very interesting story and well written. I highly recommend this story!
