Whiskers, Tails & Wings: Animal Folktales from Mexico, by Judy Goldman

From School Library Journal

Gr 3-6–This well-crafted resource offers folktales from five indigenous peoples of Mexico. Each tale is accompanied by an overview of the group's culture and history and a glossary. The Tarahumara tale, “When Señor Grillo Met Señor Puma,” is a classic story of a feisty cricket who outsmarts an arrogant puma and his friends. In the Seri tale, “Mosni's Search,” a patient sea turtle is the last animal chosen by the god of creation to retrieve sand from the sea bottom, and she is ultimately the one who succeeds. The Huichol tale, “Tlacuache's Tail,” features an opossum that steals fire to share with the people and in the process winds up with a hairless, burnt tail. He finds he can use it for hanging upside down, and his resourcefulness is celebrated. The Triqui people live in the Oaxacan region; their tale, “Ouch!” celebrates the lowly flea and tells why he was created. The Tseltal live in the Chiapas region, and they are part of the Mayan ethnic group. “Pokok Up High” relates what happens when a frog asks a vulture to carry him aloft. The tales are straightforward and lively, and this novel approach to cultural studies should prove welcome and useful. The richly detailed illustrations, done in acrylics and watercolor on custom paper and completed digitally, add to the book's appealing design.–Marilyn Taniguchi, Beverly Hills Public Library, CAα(c) Copyright 2013. We now know why fleas exist: to keep humans from being lazy! We also know that opossums once had furry tails and frogs yearned to fly but learned better. In Goldman’s compendium of delightful folktales from five indigenous Mexican cultures, she explains such mysteries of life. From “When Señor Grillo Met Señor Puma” to “Pokok up High,” each tale is accompanied by an account of the lives of the people from whom it originates and a glossary of non-English words. Colorful traditional art, done in acrylic and watercolor on texturized paper, brings the tales and people to life. Grades 4-6. --Amina Chaudhri

The concept is basic — two people like each other, they enjoy being together, but they think they want different things in life and have different ideas of commitment — which makes this series instantly involving and sympathetic. What older reader hasn’t been in a similar situation at some point? In volume 3, in a gender twist, Asuka’s career takes off while Ryu has a romantic conflict from his past pop up. (Usually, it’s the girl with the troublesome admirer and the guy with the work struggles.) Although it’s more complicated than that — Izumi Miyazono plots like Shonda Rhimes does. She’s not afraid to put in more twists, which provides a sense of movement and fast-paced interaction that suits Ryu’s public career as a newscaster and event host.It also means the few moments Asuka and Ryu seize together feel like peaceful respites. The pacing mimics the challenges of the plot events — although don’t get me wrong, their moments together are often quite hot as well, as the tension of their struggle to find time to be with each other is released for the reader in the scenes that give this an M (Mature) rating.Instead of artificial drama between the two leads, with the usual shojo recriminations and misunderstandings, I like that Everyone’s Getting Married is more likely to have a character make a self-aware realization, so that when they come back together, they’re better for each other. And I like that in Asuka’s case, she likes and is good at her job, even though she ultimately wants to leave it.Ryu’s good at his job, too, as we see him managing pushy reporters at a press conference to protect one of the interview subjects. I like the insights into how Japanese media culture works, with its cross-promotion and combined opportunities. But ultimately, this series is about romantic relationships, and mature friendships, and the choices adults make, which is a pleasure to read about and a nice change from the schoolgirl romances. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

With Volume 3, I am finding the same cliches used create drama in a relationship: former girlfriend, good looking new rival, and circumstance creating 'great misunderstandings'. The title is very sweet and certainly I appreciate that lead character Asuka is good at what she does at the office even though she wants to be a housewife instead. But I admit I'm hoping Miyazono creates something new here to make the series fresh and interesting. There has to be something more than the premise to keep me interested.Story: Asuka knows that Ryu isn't likely to ever marry her - despite that being her major goal in life. But it is enough for her now that he loves her and she loves him. But then Ryu has to work with the woman who created his anti-marriage feelings and Asuka has to wonder if he still cares for her. When one of Asuka's coworkers proposes to her and offers all that she had wanted in a relationship, she has to wonder if she is making the right choice to stay with Ryu.The intimate and romantic scenes of the couple are very sweet and the security of their relationship is only mildly compromised by all the new drama introduced in each chapter. I also liked that when Asuka complains about the selfishness of the marriage proposal, she is called out as being selfish in her own way for requiring marriage and requiring that she be a homemaker in order to find her happiness. It was a nice turning of the tables and caused Asuka pause. Most of the series is about interesting thoughts of what it means to be happy in a relationship. Is the woman who stays with an unfaithful husband actually happy despite her claims? Can a woman who wants one thing in a relationship but gets something else be happy? And can a man who sees only unhappiness from a union like marriage really find happiness if he marries and feels subconsciously trapped?Included in volume 3 is a short story entitled No Smoking For Nanaryu. As much as I love Viz's josei (adult woman oriented) titles, I keep hoping for more from Everyone's Getting Married than the standard tropes. What keeps me reading is that the relationship is gentle rather than melodramatic. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

~4/5(Contains spoilers.)This is the josei manga I've been wanting them to publish all along. I love it.We get some third party interruptions in this volume. Ryu runs into his ex again, and there's rumors about them, and conflicting emotions inside him regarding her. She's a mess and he's being pushed to help her, while at the same time trying to stay true to Asuka.Asuka, on the other hand, has been proposed to by a man who wants the same things as her—for her to be a homemaker, married with a husband. It's making her reconsider her real feelings behind wanting to be married and be a homemaker, and if it really is about a specific guy or not. It's interesting to see their conflicts about what's happening, their insecurities, and the ways that they find comfort in each other, even in just holding each other. It's heartwarming, honestly, and really sweet to see it.I love the maturity in all of this. Everything is handled with real thought and consideration, no freaking out for no reason and making rash, mindless decisions.I just want more books like this, and more of this series in particular. I get excited every time a new volume arrives.A review copy was provided by the publisher, VIZ Media, for an honest review. Thank you so, so much![More of my reviews are available on my blog, Geeky Reading, to which there's a link on my profile.]

Oh, how complicated things are getting! Ryo and his ex-girlfriend keep getting pushed together at work. He's still adamant about not getting married but seems to be ok with living together. Asuka thinks they may not last forever if they just live together and now she's had a proposal from a colleague at work who is offering her everything she ever wanted! I'm enjoying this and like that it is aimed at adult women.

In My Father's House: A New View of How Crime Runs in the Family

Review

Named one of The Marshall Project’s best criminal justice books of 2018 | Named one of CrimeReads’ best crime books of 2018"[In My Father’s House] sometimes unfolds like a novel . . . It’s a riveting multiperson topic-specific biography—the characters and context are strongly drawn and the whole creates the feel of drama even though we pretty well know where the story is going—but it’s also an intriguing and sometimes disturbing deep dive into some powerful social dilemmas.” —Mickey Edwards, Los Angeles Times“Perversely pleasurable.” —The Week “Part of the pleasure of the unseemly story Butterfield unspools is its universality . . . The Bogles, Butterfield’s subject here, will ring familiar even if you’ve never personally known anyone like them . . . vivid.” —Alice B. Lloyd, The Weekly Standard“Remarkably informative, inherently fascinating, impressively thoughtful and thought-provoking . . . an extraordinary and engaging read from beginning to end.” —Midwest Book Review"Insightful and moving." —Publishers Weekly (starred review)"A vivid case study of family values gone wrong . . . This very readable saga of a dysfunctional, close-knit family is also a thoughtful, well-documented criminal genealogy. Recommended for readers of true crime and criminal subcultures." —Library Journal"A family portrait and a study in big ideas . . . posing difficult questions about mass incarceration, cultural marginality, and persistent communities of lawlessness.” —CrimeReads“Based on an extraordinary research effort . . . An outstanding book of sociology and criminology.” —Kirkus“Fox Butterfield has written a spellbinding book, brilliant and bone-chilling. In My Father’s House will change the way we look at what makes a criminal.” —Linda Fairstein, author of Deadfall  “In My Father’s House is a critically needed book, at once searing and poignant. Whether conservative or liberal, your assumptions about our criminal justice system will be shaken when you read it. With an academic’s research, a journalist’s eye for observation, and the fluidity of a novel, Butterfield puts a human face on the statistics and studies. This should be required reading in every sociology class, for every criminal justice student, and in every law school clinic. And every American who cares about a system that is costing us nearly $200 billion annually, and has 2.3 million Americans incarcerated, can’t afford not to read it.” —Raymond Bonner, author of Anatomy of Injustice “Fox Butterfield somehow managed to find the most colorful family of outlaws in recent times, which makes for a very entertaining read. During my 44 years behind bars, I saw ample evidence that criminality runs in some families, though I never met a prisoner who had so glamorous a view of his family’s lawless exploits as do the Bogles. There’s a lot of valuable information and insight in this book, the most thought-provoking being the observation that taking children to visit their incarcerated relatives normalizes or even romanticizes prison and contributes to ‘mass incarceration thus [becoming] a vicious cycle.’” —Wilbert Rideau, author of In the Place of Justice “I was overwhelmed by In My Father's House. I simply couldn't put the book down. The reporting on a single crime-filled family, generation after generation, is truly remarkable, as is the historical and more contemporary research on crime and families. This is a book not just for criminal justice professionals but for anyone who cares about his or her community and public safety.” —Gil Kerlikowske, former Chief of Police, Seattle

This is a book that names the forest by examining the trees. The conclusion that crime runs in families is presented as newsworthy information but is no surprise to most of us. The author does support his conclusion with impressive detail about several generations of the Bogle family, whose criminal bona fides illustrate the character and characteristics of the family environment that can be expected to mold youngsters toward prison. Again, most people will not be surprised that the Bogle Family environment is conducive to criminal behavior. But the reader wonders to what end the family detail is presented. No solutions to the problem appear. The author takes great pains to point our that the Bogles are white and that research into possible genetic basses for crime is disfavored to avoid any implication of eugenics or racial prejudice but this leaves the question of genetic influence unanswered. We are left with a graphic illustration of environmental influences but an incomplete explanation and again, no solution proposed. The reader is left with the grim reality that some individuals are doomed by circumstances beyond their control and that society is powerless to help.

A dispassionate book about a very difficult subject, Butterfield mixes documentation with personal interviews and creates a tough and realistic account of how and why people take a wrong turn. And written in a readable style.

My backyard adjoined the Bogle property from 1967-1980 so I know the entire family. This was a very interesting book and I can remember all the children and some of their crimes. I never allowed my son to play with them but we were always cordial and tried to be neighborly. I knew they were into crime but hadn't realized the extent of it. The police often used our back bedroom to view what was going on at the Bogle property and often got enough information to obtain a search warrant and arrest a few family members. Fortunately, I moved from that neighborhood in 1980.

Author Fox Butterfield has written an interesting book on the Bogle's family which produced an abundant harvest of n'er-do-wells over several generations. When driving past a prison a father would tell their young child that's where they were going to go when they got older, not as an employee but as an inmate. It became sort of a badge of honor to become incarcerated as a sort of rite of passage as they came of age. It's frightening to read this book and realize that there are several families throughout the country in which crime has become a way of life where, as an inmate at a prison, you get free lodging, food, (three hots and a cot) and medical care without the pressure of earning a living and supporting yourself. Prisons have become a nursing home for many inmates at an enormous cost to the country each year.I learned that 50% of the crime is committed by 5% of the population whereas 2/3 of the crime is committed by 10% of the population. Dysfunctional families plagued by alcoholism, promiscuous sex, and drug abuse are passed on to succeeding generations giving children very little or no chance of success in life. Young people choose mates with similar problems believing they have no reason to better themselves due to poor self-concepts. Such circumstances inevitably lead to spousal abuse and divorce.Thankfully one girl in the family broke the cycle while others continued in their wayward ways. The question remains: How much of this is due to heredity and how much is due to environment. One clue may be the fact that an individual's home life (environment) gets the first crack at a child before either a peer group or a school can influence an individual. The book contains eight pages of photographs.

It would take a lot for me to give a 5 star review to any book, but this book was almost there. The subject matter and writing hit my personal interests. I really enjoyed reading the author's view and appreciated the amount of work he put into researching this family.I would definitely recommend this book to others.

I found this book to be and interesting read and was impressed with the authors detsiled research and connections with his subjects. An amazing perspective on dysfunctional families enemeshed in activity that goes against society's mores.

A must read for anybody and everybody involved in our criminal justice system, wardens, judges, parole boards, sheriffs etc etc. Also, true crime fans will enjoy this book even though it's disturbing.

An intimate look at the lives of criminal families. Shows the details of how criminals are made. More fascinating than many novels, and very educational.
