The Good: Well written introduction to chapter-reading for emerging readers. The author is an experienced teacher who knows well the minds of first graders in the US. She knows the level of vocabulary, the adequate difficulty and subjects that are of interest to them. These books will help readers get practice into reading more and pull them away from a screen at times.The Bad: The paper on which they are printed is sadly of the poor off-white porous quality of a mass market bestseller. Page design is also bare bones, printer simple and easy on the eye while scalable if you opt for the e-book version. The poor quality of the actual object will probably not instill a love for the book itself. They will be used, and then circulated to a library. Not a keeper.Conclusion: These series will fulfill a pragmatic purpose. They will work probably well in a school setting. They will not make bibliophiles.

The witches of Dunwich and their way of life and secrets are a segment of the Call of Cthulhu RPG that I always wanted to explore and this guide gives tons of great ideas. Delighted by the maps (pull out plus more close-up detailed ones) and descriptions of characters. Part of my collection I cherish!

SPOILERSChaosium's 2007 edition of H.P. Lovecraft's Dunwich (subtitled Return to the Forgotten Village) is quite an impressive role-playing supplement. The sourcebook provides a detailed overview of Dunwich, the small Massachusetts village which served as the setting for Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror. Both the story and this sourcebook expertly portray an isolated, rural village that hasn't changed much in recent decades and whose inhabitants have dark secrets and aren't particularly fond of strangers. Dunwich is very much a place where urban investigators wouldn't want to visit and certainly wouldn't want to live.The sourcebook is 189 pages and divided into eight broad sections. Artwork is black and white, but very evocative of the decayed and forgotten village. The book has several maps of Dunwich and the surrounding area, and includes a large pull-out map which can be used by Investigators to track their progress. Both traditional and d20 statistics are provided for every NPC and skill challenge.The first section of the book places Dunwich in context by detailing the geography around the village with helpful capsule summaries of nearby towns and cities.The following section is a reprint of Lovecraft's The Dunwich Horror. Investigators and Keepers alike are invited to read the story before playing, as the sourcebook is "set" several months after the events in that story and some of the adventure hooks relate to it. Unless the Keeper wants to re-create Lovecraft's story, he or she doesn't have to worry about Investigators being spoiled by it.Welcome to Dunwich is a broad overview of the village and one of the most important sections for the Keeper. It briefly discusses major NPCs, climate, getting to the village, getting around the village (cars are likely to break down on poorly-maintained unpaved roads), staying in the village (no inns, but some residents have room for boarders), and the characteristics of a sample farm and farmer. A chronology of major events in the village is provided, but for some reason stops at 1898. Finally, a "Village Directory" lists the name and map location for every single resident of the village (over 300).The Secrets of Dunwich provides a building-by-building summary of the village proper, including the general store, cemetery, meeting house, and more. Each resident of the village is described with at least a single line, but often one or more paragraphs. Sometimes these descriptions serve only as an aid to role-playing, but other times it includes potential story hooks for the Keeper. Some of the write-ups of more important NPCs include small drawings, which would certainly be worth showing to the players.This section also provides an overview of a couple of the major surprises in store for Investigators who come to Dunwich. First, there are massive caverns under the village which contain dangerous alien spores, an abandoned Mi-Go complex, and a slumbering incarnation of Abhoth, an Outer God ("Source of Uncleanliness"). Second, several residents of the village are members of a secret cult called The Believers. It's not exactly clear to me what The Believers believe in or what their activities consist of (other than dancing around a bonfire), but they are willing to act violently if Investigators discover and plan to expose them. There's a couple of other things that could provide major stories in Dunwich that are discussed elsewhere in the book, but I'll mention them here for simplicity: one of the villagers is secretly meeting with an incarnation of Nyarlahotep, and another village plans to resurrect Wizard Whateley and free the Son of Yog-Sothoth (the creature from The Dunwich Horror) from its imprisonment. One of the criticisms I have of this book is that information on each of these threats is scattered in several places throughout the book, and it's quite difficult to get the full picture without a lot of laborious skimming and flipping back-and-forth.Next up is the lengthiest section of the book, a detailed description of the various hills, mountains, swamps, and farms around Dunwich. As with the village proper, every single resident is given a name, a notation on the map, and a brief description. After reading this, one quickly gets the sense that adventures in Dunwich can involve far more than just the village itself.Another long section details the caverns underneath the village. Investigators who want to spelunk here need to treat this as a major undertaking and prepare themselves with food, climbing equipment, and a lot of courage. This is probably the closest Cthulhu gets to a "dungeon crawl", as there are no NPCs to communicate with down here and a lot of potential dangers. If possible, I'd suggest that Keepers hint to the Investigators to examine the caverns in carefully planned stages.The book includes two "adventures" which aren't scenarios in the traditional sense. The first one, "Return to Dunwich", takes place in Arkham and is designed to give the Investigators a reason to travel to Dunwich and look into the various secrets it holds. Although it includes several handouts to put them on the right track, it doesn't otherwise contain any encounters or detailed discussion of what happens once the characters arrive. As an adventure hook, "Return to Dunwich" really only works if the PCs are dedicated or professional investigators--otherwise, no reason is given why they would sacrifice time and money to travel to a dinky little village to unearth dark secrets (unless they've developed a strong relationship with Dr. Armitage through previous adventures in Arkham). The second adventure, "Earth, Sky, Soul" properly describes itself as an "incident" and is easy to place in the middle of a session if things start to get slow (I'd guess it wouldn't take more than an hour or so to resolve). It's a very dark, but effective portrayal of madness that might help hapless Investigators stumble upon one of the secrets of Dunwich.Last up are four appendices: NPC statistics if the Keeper wants to run the original The Dunwich Horror; legends and rumors that NPCs might share with Investigators; d20 system conversions; player handouts from the "Return to Dunwich" adventure. The handouts are serviceable insofar as they contain a lot of information, but for the most part they're not attractively or "authentically" portrayed--a Keeper could have a lot of fun making them into more interesting props.I don't think I've ever encountered an RPG supplement like H.P. Lovecraft's Dunwich before, in which every single resident (hundreds of them) and building (dozens of them) are described and placed on the map. In this respect, Dunwich would make a great setting for adventure as the NPCs are already detailed and there's plenty of little incidents that can happen simply by Investigators stumbling around and knocking on doors. On the other hand, this is very much a background book and the Keeper still has a lot of work to do to integrate these various NPCs into larger stories and plot-related encounters. Even with all the attention to detail, it's hard to imagine Dunwich becoming the "home base" of investigators because there's simply not a lot there to convince them to stay: no work (other than farming), no electricity, no business or amenities except a single run-down general store. The sense I get from reading the book is that the Keeper will have to work very hard to provide a very good reason if he or she wants the PCs to remain in Dunwich for any length of time.

Having already read "Escape from Innsmouth" and the Kingsport Sourcebook, I read this book less charitably than I might have when it was first released. The characters of Dunwich all seem the same - poor, widowed, incestuous, abused, etc. After reading the hundredth entry on a family, I began to feel that it would be less tiresome to simply state that people there are backward, miserable, and degenerate. But then, why would you need a sourcebook?There are many things to like about the Dunwich sourcebook, though. The secrets from beneath the earth are revealed, and they are good ones. Characters and history are well fleshed out, and the local cult (there's one in each city, it seems) is very believable, for a change. Actually, I think the cult might be the best part of the source material. It's just that, having effectively convinced me that the whole area is grubby, backward, and degenerate, I don't really want to run characters there long term. But then I would only need a scenario pack and not a sourcebook.If you're not familiar with the format of these books, they begin with the source material from HPL (in this case, "The Dunwich Horror"). This is a great idea in my mind, as it is a reminder of why you're reading this in the first place, and how to use it in a story. Town history is related, as well as an explanation of the local cult. Then, the region is split into areas which have detailed entries on the people, places, and things found in each section. This allows a large amount of information to be presented without overwhelming the reader by "chunking" the info. Also, it gives each reason its own flavor, and emphasizes the differences between parts of the Dunwich valley. The town is its own entry, and the environs are the rest of the chunks. There is also a substantial amount of info on the underground of Dunwich.The scenario section is somewhat thin. One scenario is "The Dunwich Horror", but other than stats nothing is added to Lovecraft's story, related in the first chapter (at least you're not paying for redundant material). There is a "Return to Dunwich" which has a similar feel. "Earth, Sky, Soul" is a very different kind of scenario (really a scenario seed) that might lead to more terrible explorations underground.There is also a chapter on legends, rumors, and plain old gossip. I think this is an excellent addition, as this is one of the primary ways for investigators to get clues. Including false leads just makes everything more intriguing.This is probably the weakest of the Lovecraft country sourcebooks (not scenario packs), but that still leaves Dunwich in high quality. I don't know that it has as much potential for a campaign setting as Kingsport or Arkham, but you should still find it extremely useful in plotting adventures in Lovecraft country.

I wanted to give this novel five stars for the power and beauty of Ivan Doig's prose, his lyrical descriptions of the settings, five stars for his finely drawn characterization of Rob, Angus, Lucas, and Adair. I was at times spellbound by the fineness of these elements. However, the narrative pace was slowed, almost painfully at times, by the lengthy details which caused me to skim through a few pages here and there. But Anna, unlike the other major characters, came across as wooden and even shallow. I found Adair far more interesting, and worthy of Angus' undying love, than Anna, whose only real asset was her beauty. I thought Angus possessed enough intelligence and depth of character to have figured this out for himself, but he never really did, but stubbornly clung to his idealized and pointless obsession with his unattainable first love. For a historical novel, the setting of Montana seemed like another character engaged in the struggle that drives the three major actors in the story. I would highly recommend this novel for anyone curious about Montana's climate, scenery, and history.

Loved this book and Ivan's writing style. I stayed up until after 3 am this morning to finish the book before my book club luncheon today. Enjoyed this time but lamented the rush that preempted the time to savor and reread his lyrical and poetic writing style. He uses it to good advantage transcending time quickly in sections requiring it and then delves deeply elsewhere in a manner that can have your hair on end, things are so tightly suspenseful. It was my first book by this author and I'm sure it won't be my last. The only negative from my experience reading his book was that I started with a library book but the typeface was so hard to read, I ended up purchasing the kindle version. Thought about dinging the book a star or two as a result but think it's the publisher that deserves the ding, not this incredible author and his very beautiful book.

Among his other works, Ivan Doig has written two trilogies. Dancing at the Rascal Fair is part of the Montana, aka McCaskill, trilogy, and although it was written as the second book in that series, it covers the earliest time period, 1889-1919. It makes sense to read it first.As before, Doig paints a portrait of Montana in the early years of its growth and brings his characters to life in such a way that you feel you know them. He depicts seasons, time, and place poetically and allows the reader to immerse him/herself in those surroundings in all their imagery. The winters are forbidding, deadly ferocious; the winds whip through the pages; the smells of burning land pierce the reader's senses and burn the reader's eyes. You behold the beauty of the Rocky Mountains, the clear running rivers, the green spring grasses, and the vast, seemingly endless vistas.I was completely caught up in this story of the early settlers and homesteaders in the Two Medicine country, their dreams, friendships, disillusionments, loves, and tragedies. Doig's writing is simply wonderful......what separates literature from mere fiction.

This novel was so frustrating. I love Mr. Doig's style of writing and the first third of this novel was riveting. Then, Angus McCaskill doesn't get to marry the woman he loves. He spends the rest of the novel whining and pining for the woman he can't have rather than focusing on the wonderful wife he is married to. It's so irritating and completely ruined the rest of the novel. Skip this one and read 'The Whistling Season' instead.

It's been noted by other reviewers, and I agree that Dancing at the Rascal Fair is more than just a novel; it's a piece of literature. In fact, it’s been a while since I read a book as well written as this one. Ivan Doig is a master at description, and this novel is peopled by interesting, well-developed characters. Plus, the historical setting, Montana during its settlement period in the 1890s and early 1900s, is one about which I knew almost nothing.As with many literary pieces, there is a significant amount of symbolism going on, for the reader who chooses to notice: water, wheels, hands, the weather, etc. Fortunately, it's not necessary to analyze it to death to enjoy this well-told tale. In the end,while I was not very happy with the conclusion of the story, it was so well written that I’m giving it five stars anyway.

I had read Ivan Doig before, but just discovered "Dancing At The Rascal Fair." I skipped his latest book because the character of Morrie rubbed me the wrong way. So I picked up this one, which somehow I had missed. There's just one caveat I have. The idea that not only did Angus love Anna through the years, but that the love never changed or waned, and that he was willing to hurt his wife and son with that knowledge, bothered me. Love doesn't endure that way, especially if it first happened at 19 and didn't work out. Angus didn't give his wife a fair chance by carrying on and on about his love for Anna. Also, as far as I could tell, she didn't reciprocate that love in the way Mr. Doig insinuates. She chose someone else, and though she sometimes (very occasionally) met Angus alone, there was no hint of her carrying the torch the way he did. I think only a man would have carried on with that plot point for so long. But overall, of course, I thought this was a wonderful book and a wonderful story.

Read English Creek when I picked it up at a thrift store because I had read THE WHISTLING SEASON a few years ago in my book club. So, when I saw this was the beginning of the characters in English Creek, I sent for the book. It is not the kind of book you want to speed read. It is definitely one to savor the words and the construction of the plot and the eventual consequences of people's choices. His descriptive passages about Montana and the weather are really remarkable for their vividness and color. Good book! Highly recommend it.

Reading this book forced me to review why I was writing and why I wanted to publish. I now have a much more focused plan and I know why I’m pursuing all of this.I found Ms. Friedman while I was working on my manuscript and searching for advice about copyright issues. The article I found led me to her website where I reviewed the services she offered. When I completed the first draft of my book I decided to read her book before I setup an appointment to discuss my project with her. I'm very glad I did. I wrote several technical books many years ago which gave me some experience with traditional publishing, but I knew I had no clue what the options were for self publishing. I also wanted advice on the choice to pursue traditional versus self publishing. I'm very glad I read her book before I talked with her. I got many of my questions answered from her book which made my time talking with her much more valuable.In thinking about how best to describe why I would recommend this book, I came up with three words: relevance, brevity and clarity. This book describes what you need to understand about the way the publishing world works today, whether that lines up with your romantic visions or not. The information is very relevant to someone like me that is working on getting published for the first time in a very long time. Ms. Friedman doesn’t waste time with lots of talk, the information is delivered quickly and she makes it easy to understand. She is also very clear about what you need to know and what you need to do. If you want someone to help you prepare to really get something published, you should read this book.I want to be clear that not all of what I read was what I wanted to hear. Some of Ms. Friedman’s most specific advice required that I carefully review why I was writing and what I was trying to accomplish. I was very excited to have finished my first draft of my manuscript and I wanted to know what I needed to do next to get published. Instead, after reading this book, I realized I was not at all prepared for publishing. I needed to rethink my entire project. I also needed to create a website, something that was not at all part of my plan. You can’t get 120,000 words together without caring about your project, so it was upsetting to read that I had to take on another project to setup a website. But it was what I really needed to hear, and what I needed to do next.Here are some specific topics discussed that were useful to me, things that I encourage you to think about:Writing is not for the weak. Indeed, any creative project, especially if it will be put in front of the public, requires a strong will.Your motivation to write has to come from within. Yes, very much so. You have to want to do this, there are too many obstacles and too few rewards to getting your work published, and you have to believe in your work.What do you really want out of this process? If you don’t know what you are after, how will you know if you ever get it?Passion has become a cheap word. This is my favorite, so many people are pursuing their passion, but do they ever really get anything done, or is it really a code word for wanting to do what you want when you want until it gets difficult?Why are you in a rush? No one is waiting for my writing project to be published. This isn’t me being defeatist or my lacking passion, it is just a simple fact. Why not take the time to find persons that know more than I do about publishing in the digital world and learn what I need to do to really find and reach my audience?Don’t focus on just one book. Another simple fact, whatever I’m writing may or may not have much of an audience, and endlessly working on it may not change that. Better to see this as a process, not to publish my current project, but a process to keep producing work I care about, a process to get my work to those that are interested.Your platform should be as much of a creative exercise and project as the work you produce. Instead of looking at the need for a website, for example, as some sort of evil conspiracy forced on you by the corrupt publishing world, why not see it as another outlet for your creativity, your vision?Come up with a marketing plan that you can execute on your own. You, as the author, are the best person to find your audience, don't rely on a publisher to do this for you.Specific advice on marketing, along with this important observation, “so few authors do any of this”. Get your website established and get professional headshots to use in all your online and offline marketing efforts.I also recommend what she says in her Afterword, that at some point, we have to do what we do because we want to, not just to get published. She also has a Twitter following many would envy, and a successful blog.Publishing 101 is a compilation of posts from her blog, and is well worth reading, particularly for what she calls beginning or early career writers. She makes clear that there is no "secret" to becoming a best-selling author, and the journey is going to be different for everyone. This was especially illustrated when she was talking about how she gained 100,000+ Twitter followers--she recognises she got a lot of those followers because she was the editor of Writer's Digest, which isn't a path open to everyone!The focus is on those who are aiming for a traditional publishing contract, although a large part of the book is actually talking about marketing. In this she reinforces the advice I've read from other authors on the importance of having your own self-hosted website/blog and mailing list, not relying on external sites like Facebook (particularly relevant given the changes coming to Facebook in early 2015 which will affect the ability of authors to promote).Overall, recommended for people seeking reliable information about publishing.

There is a lot of really great advice here and a lot of expertise in the author's areas of specialization. One big issue is that the author has a serious fixation on WordPress, presumably because that's what she's used to, but WP is not a good solution for beginners. There are others out there that are fast, intuitive, and with an easy learning curve, and which support advanced features as well. Some are inexpensive apps with permanent licenses while others offer quick plug-and-play solutions for a small monthly fee. Ask around and do an online search and you'll find quite a few.The author also mentions Flash, but this is dying technology that has serious security issues. It has been replaced by HTML5 animation, which works for all devices. There are a number of easy and intuitive HTML5 apps available which you can use to create animated text and images, interactive slide shows and more, and which are far easier to use than Flash. The importance of this type of interactive content on your site is that that can really spice things up, keep visitor on the site longer, and boost its search engine rankings.The author also includes misplaced warnings about "self hosting." If you work with a large hosting service such as GoDaddy, security and backup services are available, as well as at least one email account for your domain, which is included with all packages).As for the advice about writing, blogging, strategies, publishing and so-on, the author is a definite expert. Th is is what provides the true value of this book.
