This book is great for step by step instruction. It has space to attach your samples of your attempted work so it doubles as a workbook. I love this book because it taught me a lot about the basics. I know how to measure someone now, I know how to a lot of different stitches and their purposes based off this book. I have since gone on to sew pillows, puppets, gloves, full cosplays, and more. I have even shared my knowledge with others. Very good book to teach a complete novice how to sew.

I used this book in my very first costume design class in college, however when I was finished with the class I gave it to my sister. She uses many of the skills she learned in this book to make purses and my niece's clothes and costumes (my niece is rather tall and curvy for her age and we have a hard time finding clothes that are appropriate for her). I made all different size dresses to send to African orphans using this book!It would be a great addition to any homeschool home ed class as well.

I was required to buy this handbook for a class this semester. The content of this book is useful but the folder it came with was useless as the rings were all bent out of shape and would not line up properly to close. It tore several of the pages it was supposed to hold onto every time I tried to flip to another page. I ended up using an old binder I had with large D rings and transferring the package to that. The makers of the handbook might want to consider using D ring binders for their product.

I knew some of the basic stitches the book teaches but this goes over it in more detail than I was taught.I was slightly disappointed when the book came in (I knew it was going to be a binder as I saw this in our school book store before I bought it) but the pages were not hole punched properly and all of the top holes needed to be reinforced with those round stickers.This book was required for class and after only getting through chapter one and two I know I've learned a lot more. I like the set up of the opening chapters, and the chapter discussing measurements is set up ok. It was a bit out of order from the measurement sheet that comes with the book, but the descriptions of what needed to be measured was great.Overall I think it was a good purchase, and this book will be kept with my sewing kit at all times. The ability to attach samples of the stitches is a nice touch that will let me know, ok yeah I did this before I can do it again.

This book is good for the theater student and costume design and someone who aspires to being a costume designer for the theater. It's a lot different and it's not not like making your own clothes but it's for the characters in the play and a good job if your talented and love theater.

Great book for my costume techniques class. It can get a little confusing if you do not already have some knowledge of basic sewing terms. However, with this book's instructions, the pictures, and my professor's explanations and demonstrations I am learning so much. I also love that there are places to staple or tape your samples right into the book. I will definitely be using this book as a reference long after I finish this class.

The diagrams can be a bit confusing, and the binder arrived with a ring that is partially bent and won't close. However, the book has good basic information for teaching beginning sewing.

Besides conventional finite-difference and -element techniques, more advanced spatial-approximation methods are examined in some detail, including nonoscillatory schemes and adaptive-grid approaches. A MOL toolbox has been developed within MATLAB®/OCTAVE/SCILAB. This is a Zadie at her best, I feel. As a speaker/thinker/writer on culture and language, she is gifted and able to think through events and experiences in a way that really gives the reader a fresh perspective. I tore through this in two days (though do NOT buy the Audible version as I purchased both just to support her. The audiobook sadly presents her work by a different reader who is dull and reads as though she's half asleep without the charm and nuance that Zadie has when you hear her speak during readings/lectures/presentations/interviews. The reader chosen just absolutely kills the work. Think some conservative man without inflection reading David Sedaris. This is just an opinion but if you can just read it and that way you have her voice in your head when you do). That said, the essay collection is truly phenomenal. Her ability to go high low and interweave culture and social perspectives is really a wonderful reading experience.

i have been collecting native species books for the rockies for quite some time. i hike and work in the mountains and prairies of montana and am limited to what i can carry into the wild. this book is the best all encompassing book for anyone interested in identifying and knowing the world around them as they swagger through Montana's great wilderness areas!

Excellent book, well written and designed. Only draw back is it has only black and white illustrations.

Rich in knowledge and style. Excellent.

Mathews Cascade Olympic Natural History has been a delightful companion for years. It has so much more than "what kinda bird is that" and his new book has much more. When you take it along, and want to savour somewhere from Jasper to the Tetons, there is much to delight. Material the non-specialist can't find anywhere, such as the appendix on scientific names. I used to learn them to try to sound knowledgeable, but no more. Daniel's details on climate change force the reader to think for herself. The only other book like it is Ben Gadd's on the Canadian Rocky Mountains. They really complement one another.

I found this book last fall and can't praise it enough. Mathews has found a way to give us a nature guide that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the varied ecosystems of the Rockies with clarity and depth. This is a guide that opens up the diverse worlds of fauna, flora, weather and geology. In addition, in one of the appendices there is a marvelous essay on "scientific latin" drawing out in plain english those tags and phrases that are so confusing when needing to consult texts written by technical researchers. Its an exceedingly well written volume. As the back cover blurb by David James Duncan says, "This book is exacting, funny, prophetic, sometimes dark, sometimes fantastic, and as rife with narrative pull as a fine novel."

You can find tomes about wildflowers or geology that may be more encyclopedic than Mathew's work, but for its sheer enjoyable style, comprehensiveness and breadth, there's nothing like Rocky Mountain Natural History (except maybe its companion Cascade-Olymic Natural History). This book reads the way the hiker or traveler thinks while exploring the wilds; where one's curiosity extends seamlessly from one inquiry to the next. Written in elegant yet efficient style, it's a page-turner. One comes away from a reading more knowledgeable and appreciative of the interconnectedness of the natural world.

A field guide for those who go afield in fear of guides, this 656-page tome is by turns hilarious, stern, ominous, playful, instructive, instructed, and is more linguistically alive (“Sphagnum species specialize”) than any member of the field guide family I’ve ever encountered.

This book is a noble effort but will leave the reader somewhat disappointed. The author should have reduced the scope of the book and provided more information on fewer topics. The result is a superficial 'all in one' book that is not satisfying for the natural history keener.
